Six bowlers roll perfect games at National Bowling Stadium

2011USBCOCMichaelMoore.jpgMichael Moore (pictured) of Orlando, Fla., flirted with a spot in the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships record books when he rolled a 297 game during the 2009 event in Las Vegas, and two years later, he finally solidified his place in history with an 802 series on the championship lanes June 4.

While many bowling fans, and USBC's live stream cameras, crowded behind lanes 9 and 10 to watch 13-time Team USA member Diandra Asbaty and her talented teammates make their run at USBC Open Championships glory, Moore quietly was striking away at the other end of National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.

This year, the 23-year-old right-hander fired games of 279, 268 and 255 and registered the record-breaking 11th 800 series of the 2011 Open Championships, which marked the most in a single tournament. There have been 10 800s on three occasions (1991, 1996 and 2002), and a total of 21 in six previous visits to the Stadium.

2011USBCOCTurbo2N1Grips1.jpg2011USBCOCMattWeggen.jpgAlong with accomplishing a lifelong goal, Moore helped his team to a 3,141 total. Turbo 2-N-1 Grips 1 of Madison, Wis. (left), leads Regular Team with 3,473.

"It is a major goal in my life," said Moore, who is the manager at Lighting Strikes Pro Shop. "Two years ago, I shot 297 in team. I had the front 11 and got a little nervous. I felt like I lost an opportunity that doesn't come around very often. Now, a couple years later, I was able to accomplish another goal."

Moore added 758 in singles and 585 in doubles for a 2,145 all-events total, which is good for 17th place in Regular All-Events. Matt Weggen (right) of Muscatine, Iowa, leads with 2,268.

Six bowlers roll perfect games at National Bowling Stadium

2011USBCOCRichardJenkins.jpgAfter almost a week without a perfect game at the USBC Open Championships, the drought ended with six 300s at the National Bowling Stadium.

Richard Jenkins (pictured left) of Las Vegas was the first to get the job done on June 2, while Dan Lemiesz of Machesney Park, Ill., and James Lord of Fort Mill, S.C., notched the 34th and 35th perfect games of the 2011 tournament June 4.

Todd Whitesides of Lake Wylie, S.C., Samantha Jimenez of Rowland Heights, Calif., and Ronald Bear Jr. of Christmas, Fla., followed suit June 5.

Jenkins' perfect effort was the 33rd of the year, marking the most in a single visit to the Stadium. The 32-year-old right-hander added 193 and 225 for a 718 singles series. His 569 in doubles and 556 in team for a 1,843 all-events total.

2011USBCOCDanLemiesz.jpg"It's the cliché of all clichés, but you just can't believe something like this, even after it's done," said Jenkins, who made his fifth Open Championships appearance. "I made a move in singles and told myself to stay committed. I just tried to shut my mind off and let it happen. This is unbelievable."

Lemiesz (right) made his way to the Open Championships as a last minute substitute and quickly made his presence felt at the Stadium. It was his first appearance on the championship lanes.

The 19-year-old right-hander fired 12 consecutive strikes during his second game of doubles and bookended it with games of 213 and 205 for a 718 series. He added 724 in team and 713 in singles for a 2,155 all-events total, which puts him just outside of the top 10. Matt Weggen leads both Regular Singles and Regular All-Events with 826 and 2,268, respectively.

2011USBCOCJamesLord.jpg"This feels like the best 300 I've ever shot," said Lemiesz, who hones his skills at Don Carter Lanes in Rockford, Ill. "After I threw the second shot of that game, something clicked, and I just knew I was going to shoot 300, although, it was the most nervous I've ever been when attempting to shoot 300."

Lord (left) also was a last-minute entry into the 2011 Open Championships and wasn't even scheduled to bowl until just over a week ago. He, too, made the most of the opportunity.

2011USBCOCToddWhitesides.jpgThe 46-year-old left-hander started his singles event with 224 and 225 before closing with 300 for a 749 series, the highest set of his tournament career. He also had 622 in team and 555 in doubles for a career-best, 1,926, all-events total.

Whitesides' (right) 300 was the 36th of this year's tournament, and he added games of 254 and 257 for an 811 set to help S & S Investments of Matthews, N.C., to a 3,236 team total. His 800 series was the 12th of the year and made him just the 29th bowler in Open Championships history to have both a 300 and an 800 at the tournament. He is one of nine bowlers to accomplish both at the Stadium.

Whitesides added 666 in singles and 649 in doubles for a 2,126 all-events total.

2011USBCOCSamanthaJimenez.jpgJimenez became the first woman since 2009, and seventh overall, to roll a perfect game at the Open Championships. It was the 37th of the 2011 tournament.

The 22-year-old right-hander added games of 247 and 183 for a 730 series and helped Hanging Chads 1 of Rowland Heights, Calif., to a 3,305 total. Turbo 2-N-1 Grips 1 of Madison, Wis., leads Regular Team with 3,473.

2011USBCOCRonaldBear.jpg"First of all, shooting it at Nationals is just crazy," said Jimenez, an Open Championships first-timer who added 681 in doubles and 539 in singles for a 1,950 all-events total. "You think about it, but you don't think it's actually going to happen. And being the seventh woman that's ever done is just an honor. It's pretty cool, and seven is a lucky number."

Kristine Kropf of Antioch, Calif., was the first to reach the milestone when she did so at the Stadium in 2001.

Bear (right), a 44-year-old right-hander who made his seventh tournament appearance, tossed 12 consecutive strikes between games of 170 and 227 for a 697 singles series. He added 620 in team and 576 in doubles for a career-best, 1,893, all-events total.

Richard Oswald of Mesa, Ariz., made his own run at perfection this week before a 4 pin left him with the 16th 299 game of this year's tournament. The near-perfect effort came between games of 223 and 225 for a 747 singles series. He added 638 in team and 572 in doubles for 1,957.

Nebraska bowler wins truck at USBC Open Championships

2011USBCOCJoeLeonard.jpg2011USBCOCJoeLeonard2.jpgWhen Joe Leonard of Omaha, Neb., heard the round of applause and began receiving congratulatory high-fives, he still was unaware of why he was receiving such praise as he made his 21st consecutive USBC Open Championships appearance June 1.

Leonard was selected as the fourth and final winner of a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck through the USBC Eagle's Nest, a club formed by USBC and the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority to recognize team captains who fielded teams in 2010 and 2011.

Open Championships Tournament Manager Duane Hagen and RSVCA Communications Manager Ben McDonald were on hand to make the announcement and presentation.

"I just couldn't believe I won," said Leonard, who is a co-owner of Omaha's Western Bowl. "I didn't even really know what was going on. I didn't know there was a prize giveaway. I was just really, really surprised. I'm on cloud nine."

The 45-year-old right-hander has been a team captain since the 1999 event in Syracuse, N.Y.

A look ahead

2011USBCWCShannonPluhowsky.jpgShannon Pluhowsky (pictured right), an 11-time Team USA member, will hit the tournament lanes June 10-11 looking to add USBC Open Championships success to her growing list of career highlights.

Her doubles and singles events will be broadcast live from the National Bowling Stadium on BOWL.com at 8:30 p.m. EDT on June 11.

Also this week, Donald Beitler of South Bend, Ind., will become the 13th bowler this year, and 142nd in tournament history, to make 50 appearances on the championship lanes.

The 79-year-old will make his milestone march down Center Aisle on the afternoon of June 9. In 49 Open Championships appearances, he has knocked down 80,612 pins for a career average of 184.
