Second gold medal for Swedish boys in Trios event

Doubles champions Marcus Berndt and Pontus Halvarsson teamed with James Gruffman to win the second gold medal for Sweden in the boys Trios event at the 19th European Youth Championships Denmark.
The Swedes felled 3626, an average of 201,44 for six games, and maintained a slim 4-pin lead over Germany. Pontus led the team with 1287. Germany's Sascha Obst, Florian Hinterwimmer and Michael Koch came up strong but despite a 276 by Sascha, the trio fell four pins short to earn the silver medal with 3626 (201,22).
Finland's Juhani Tonteri, Mikko Masalin and Jani Heikkinen overtook Danes Thomas Larsen, Paul Hutchinson and Bo Winther in the final game to secure the bronze medal with 3565 (198,06). Denmark finished fourth with 3549.
Norwegian Svein Åke Ek rolled the highest six-game block of the tournament thus far to help his trio grab the fifth place and to move into the lead in All Events. Svein Åke had games of 157, 247, 219, 247, 220 and 289 for 1379, an average of 229,83. With six games in the Team event to go, the Norwegian has totaled 2539 pins, an average of 211,58 for 12 games. Sascha Obst is second with 2502, with Thomas Larsen third 2492.
Competition continues on Friday and Saturday with the Team event. The top 24 players in All Events (18 games) will advance to the Masters finals on Saturday and Sunday. The top 8 players earn a bye for the first round of single elimination best-of-three games match play.
