Karen Marcano sweeps Iliana Lomeli to win Women Masters at Centroamericanos

2010CACGKarenMarcano.jpg2010CACGIlianaLomeli.jpgKaren Marcano (pictured left) from Venezuela won the coveted Women's Masters title in the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games when she defeated Iliana Lomel (right)i, Mexico, two-games-to-none, Sunday at Bolera Caribe in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

The top 16 players from the All Events standings (combined results of Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Trios and Team competition) advanced to the best-of-three games single-elimination Masters match play.

Other than in international bowling events such as the World Championships and European Championships, where in each round the highest seeded player meets the lowest seeded player, the second highest the second lowest and so on, the Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) is contesting its Masters match play in a bracket system like in tennis.

2009WWCSandraGongora3.jpg2009WWCClaraGuerrero5.jpgAs a result Marcano, seeded 13, met No. 16 Sandra Gongora (left) in the semifinal after the Mexican eliminated top seeded Rocio Restrepo, Colombia, in the opening round, 2-1. In the other semifinal Lomeli, seeded second, had to face No. 3 seed, Clara Juliana Guerrero (right), Colombia.

Marcano ousted Gongora with two straight wins (199-179, 186-184) while Lomeli topped Guerrero, who won the Masters title at the 2009 Women's World Championships in Las Vegas, in a close match, 2-0 (192-189 and 256-247).

In the title match, Marcano took a 1-0 lead after winning the first game, 249-219 and wrapped up the title with a 211-205 in game #2.

Marcano won her second gold medal in the Centroamericanos after the Team event, Lomeli earned the silver medal while Guerrero and Gongora shared the bronze.

Colombia led the women's medal tally with 4 gold and 6 bronze medals. Rocio Restrepo was the most valuable player winning the titles in Singles, Mixed Doubles, Trios and All Events. Venezuela was second with 2 gold (Team, Masters) and 2 silver medals. The Dominican Republic women won the gold medal in Doubles. The Mexican women earned 3 silver and 3 bronze, while Guatenala and the host country Puerto Rico got 1 silver medal each.

2010CACGLogo.jpg The 21st Central American and Caribbean Games (XXI Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos y del Caribe) took place in the city of Mayagüez and in other cities of the Porta del Sol region in the west of Puerto Rico. The Bowling competition was held at Bolera Caribe in Ponce from July 19-25, 2010.

72 women from 14 member federations of CONCECABOL (Confederacion Centroamericana y del Caribe de Bowling - Central and Caribbean Bowling Confederation) - Aruba (6), Bahamas (6), Bermuda (6), Colombia (6), Guatemala (6), Mexico (6), Panama (6), Puerto Rico (6), Venezuela (6), Dominican Republic (5), Costa Rica (4), El Salvador (4), Honduras (3), Virgin Islands (2) - competed for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Trios, 5-Player Teams, All Events and Masters.
