Brian Voss fills his trophy case in Czech Open 2010

25-time PBA Champion Brian Voss, Kennesaw, Ga. filled his trophy case when he won the title in the Czech Open 2010 Sunday at Bowland in Olomouc, Czech Republic. In the championship match over two games total pinfall, the former PBA Player of the Year flew past Vytautas Gykis, Lithuania, 476-370, to wrap up the title and to earn the 2.500 Euro top prize.

The Czech Open 2010 drew 223 players, 188 men and 35 women, from 13 countries, Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden and the United States.
The top 84 players after qualifying (6 games) advanced to the finals. The top 12 received three byes. The field of 72 players was trimmed to 12 during the first three rounds of the finals and joined the top 12 qualifiers in Round 4.
All 24 bowled 3 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 12 who advanced with the 3-game total being carried forward. The top 6 advanced to the playoffs. All matches consisted of three games, with total pins determining the winners.
In the first round, No. 3 met No. 6 and No. 4 took on No. 5. The winners met No. 1 and No. 2 in the semifinals. The winners of the semifinals determined the champion.
Voss, who will serve on the coaching staff of the Austrian national team during the upcoming Men's World Championship in August, bypassed the first three rounds of the finals after finishing qualifying in 11th place with 1303 for six games. Jan Spáčil, Czech Republic, led the field with 1364.

Voss barely survived his first round (4th round overall) when he took the 12th and last spot to advance with 608 3-game total. Clemens Ulsamer, Germany led the way with 736.
With the pinfall being carried forward, Voss knew he had to make up some ground in the next three games to make the cut to the top 6. The American came out of the gates with a huge 299 and added 205 and 265 for 769 to rocket into second place with 1377 six-game total or an average of 229.50. Ulsamer earned the No. 1 seed with 693 for 1429 pinfall total (238.17).
The top 2 could sit and wait while No. 3 Juha Maja, Finland, eliminated No. 6 Jiřà Hindrák, Czech Republic, 425-360, and Gykis, seeded 5th, topped No. 4 Kristijonas Sergejevas, Lithuania, 394-358.
Voss took on Maja in the semifinal. In a high-scoring match, the Finn took a one-pin lead after a 248-247 win in game one but Voss rebounded with 268-247 to advance, 515-495. Meanwhile Gykis stunned tournament leader Ulsamer, 429-409.
In the title match, the PBA Hall of Famer took a comfortable 68-pin lead after the first game (249-181) and never looked back. He sealed the victory with a 227-189 in game two.
Gykis received 1.300 for second place and Ulsamer pocketed 800 Euro for third.
