Gery Verbruggen leads top 48 into the finals at 6th Storm San Marino Open

Shoots 1467 series to earn 1.000 Euro bonus

2010EBT11GeryVerbruggen.jpg2010EBT11DennisEklund.jpg4-time EBT ranking champion Gery Verbruggen (pictured left), Belgium, improved his previous high series of 1417 by 50 pins Saturday in Squad 20 en route to win the qualifying in the 6th Storm San Marino Open and to earn a 1.000 Euro bonus.

The lefty, who has won the EBT rankings in the first four years (2000-03), started his series with 268 and 258 but slowed down the next games (180, 226) and needed 530 in the last two games to beat out Dennis Eklund, Sweden (1462), for the top spot. Verbruggen finished with 269 and 266 for 1467, a 244.67 average, to overtake the lead by five pins.

35-time PBA champion Pete Weber (left), a PBA and USBC Hall of Famer, finished second to Verbruggen in Squad 20 to leap into 4th place with 1425 including high games of 265 and 259. Defending San Marino Open champion and 3-time EBT ranking champion Paul Moor (right), England, was 5th with 1421.

Rounding out the top 6, who will bypass the first two rounds of the finals, was PBA Player of the Year 2003-04, Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, a 2-time EBT champion this season. Koivuniemi led Squad 21 with 1298, 107 pins less than his high series of 1405.

2010EBT11PriscillaMaaswinkel.jpg2010EBT11NicoleSanders.jpgAmong the players, who got one bye for finishing 7th thru 12th was current EBT ranking leader Dominic Barrett, England (8th, 1391) and two of the five women, who survived the first cut, Priscilla Maaswinkel (left, 9th, 1368) and Lisanne Breeschoten (12th, 1340), both Netherlands.

Their compatriot Nicole Sanders (right) led Saturday morning squad 19 with 1293 including 48 pins handicap to help grab the 36th place. Barrett led the 22nd and final qualifying squad with 1383. Swede Mattias Wetterberg hit the cutoff number for 38th place with 1290 or an average of 215.00.

Joining the top 38 in the finals were the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 3-4, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 5-7 and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad. Marco Reviglio, Italy, led the 24 players in the one-game Desperado Squad with 268 and was followed by Kim Bolleby and Johan Helldén, both Sweden, with 254 and 222.

Women receive 8 pins handicap each game. a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour

The tournament is the 11th stop of the 2010 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Gold" tournaments. Since the Ankara Open and the Austria Challenge have been cancelled, the 2010 EBT Tour consists of 19 events - 2 EBT Platinum tournament (formerly Premier), 6 EBT Gold tournaments (formerly Major), 7 EBT Silver tournaments (formerly Challenger) and 4 EBT Satellite tournaments (new category).

Amanda Fagan, United States, was the top-ranked woman in 27th place and won the women's rankings.

A total of 48 players advanced to the finals on Sunday - the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 3-4, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 5-7 and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad. The top 6 qualifiers earned two byes, while qualifiers 7-12 got one.

The other 36 players will bowl four games from scratch to cut to the top 18, who will meet qualifiers 7-12 in round two. Those 24 bowl another 4 games from scratch to cut to the top 10, who will join the top six qualifiers in single-elimination match play with the two game total pinfall determining the winner.

The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded, the second-highest seeded players bowls the second-lowest and so on. The field will be cut to 8, 4 then 2, who will bowl for the title and the 10.000 Euro top prize.

A total of 48 players advanced to the finals including the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 5-7 (places 39-42), the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 3-4 (places 43-45) and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad (places 46-48). The top 6 earn two byes, while qualifiers 7-12 get one.
