2010 European Senior Bowling Championships conclude with Masters competition

936 senior bowlers - 287 women and 649 men - from 21 countries competed in the 2010 European Senior Bowling Championships in Vienna, Austria for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles and Trios. The top 6 players in each age group in the All Events standings (18 games) advanced to the Masters finals Friday at Plus Bowling.
The finalists bowled five games round robin match play with the All Events total being carried forward. Players received 20 pins bonus per win and 10 for a tie. Additional 5 pins bonus were given for games from 200-249 and 10 pins bonus for 250-300.
All three leaders in the women's division refused to fall and captured the gold medals.
Wilma Spitzmüller (center) claimed the third gold medal for the host country of Austria in Group A (50-57 years). Spitzmüller had games of 203, 204, 187, 182 and 183 and won three of her five matches to finish atop the leaderboard with 4627 pinfall total.

Group B (58-64 years) Doubles and Women Trios champion Yvette Murrath, Belgium, earned her third gold medal of the championships in the Masters competition with 4677 pinfall total including 65 bonus pins.
Claudine Malard, France, Narrowed the gap to 39 pins behind a 1042 series and a 5-0 won-lost record to secure the silver medal with 4638. Maila Virtanen, Finland, who made the cut for the Masters in sixth place stormed to the bronze medal with 4397.
Finnish bowlers finished 1-4 in Group C (65 years and older) en route to sweep all three medals. All Events leader Kaisu-Leena Lummaa maintained her lead with a 909 pinfall total in Round robin and won two of her five matches to finish with 4474 pinfall total including bonus and handicap.
Paula Eriksson jumped from 5th to second place to take the silver medal with 4442. Group C Doubles champion Tytti Vainikka leaped from 4th to third place and beat out team mate Irmeli Nenonen for the bronze medal by 31 pins, 4405 to 4374.
None of the three top seeds in the men's division walked away with the gold medal.
Udo Sulp won the first medal for Estonia in Group A with 5117 pinfall total including 85 pins bonus. Sulp, who started the day in third place 45 pins behind leader Chris Van Damme, Belgium, posted the group-best 1096 series including games of 211, 204, 245, 214 and 222 to overtake Teemu Raatikainen, Finland by 7 pins.
Raatikainen, who had a 1059 series and 80 bonus, maintained his second place to take the silver medal with 5110. Van Damme fell to third place despite a 1048 series and 80 bonus. All three players won three of their five matches.
Kari Komulainen, Finland, who had a 112-pin lead in Group B All Events, had to withdraw due to injury. 4th seeded Israel Tener, Israel, took full advantage and fired the field-best 1141 series (215, 222, 205, 244 and 255) to cruise to the title with 5225 pinfall total including 110 bonus (4-1).
Wolfgang Wondratsch, Austria, maintained second place to secure the silver medal with 5077 including 75 bonus. Jochen Diekhoff, Germany, leaped from sixth to third place with 5048 including 95 bonus.
Singles and Doubles champion Alain Aubert came from third place to win the third gold medal for France in Group C. Aubert used the group-best 1106 series and a 4-1 match-play record to claim the gold medal with 5107 pinfall total including 110 bonus and 20 handicap.
German bowling center proprietor Kalle Gaiser jumped from 6th to second place with 4919 behind a 1069 performance and a 3-2 W-L record. 4th placed Arne Hybelius, Sweden, beat out All Events leader, Aubert's Doubles partner Jack Navarro, by one pin to grab the bronze medal with 4891. Hybelius had 168 in the last game and Navarro 167.

Each division, men and women, was divided into three age groups. Group A was for players from 50-57 years of age, Group B included players 58-64 years of age and players who were 65 years and older competed in Group C. Participants in Group C received 1 pin bonus per game for each full year over 65 years (for example, a 70-year-old gets five 5 handicap per game). The age on the day of competition was used to determine the age group.
All players bowled six games each in Singles, Doubles and Trios over three days. The top six men and the top six women of the All Events standings (combined results in Singles, Doubles and Trios) in all three age groups advanced to the Masters finals in round robin match play format. There were no medals given in All Events.
13 of the 21 participating countries shared the 20 gold, silver and bronze medals. Finland led the medal tally with 5 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze medals. The host country was second with 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze followed by France (3-3-1), Belgium (3-1-3), Israel (2-0-1), Sweden (1-1-3), Norway (1-1-0), Netherlands (1-0-0), Estonia (1-0-0), Italy (0-2-1), Germany (0-2-1), Ireland (0-0-1) and Switzerland (0-0-1).
