2010 PBA Senior Tour #5

2009PBASHarrySullins.jpg2010PBASSteveFerraro.jpgHarry Sullins (pictured left) of Chesterfield Township, Mich., moved into the second round lead in the 2010 PBA Senior U.S. Open at the Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas with a 2,746 12-game pinfall (228.8 average).

In Tuesday’s second six-game block he bowled games of 203, 234, 242, 245, 236 and 233 to take a 71-pin lead over Steve Ferraro (right) of Kingston, N.Y., in second with 2,675.

When Sullins finished fourth in the 2009 PBA Senior U.S. Open, it marked a turning point in his career. Despite having to work through a nagging tendon and tennis elbow injury last year, Sullins went on to capture an emotional win in the 2009 PBA Senior World Championship last September in his hometown of Detroit for his first Senior Tour title.

That win would land him a berth in the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions where he finished 14th. Throughout the winter and spring he would bowl well enough in PBA senior regional tournaments to be named PBA Midwest and Central Region Senior Player of the Year.

“It sounds strange but it kind of changed my game for the better,” said the 52-year-old Sullins, who also owns five career Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour titles. “It forced me to change the way I throw the ball but in a good way. Sometimes when you have to work through an injury it has a bad effect but in my case it had a positive effect.”

Now Sullins has to navigate his way through the rest of another demanding Senior U.S. Open format while still taking care of his ailing right arm.

“It’s definitely something I can manage more easily now with over-the-counter medication and taping it up,” he said. “My toughest block will be tomorrow but I have a game plan in mind. Basically, I just want to grind out the first couple of games and hope I get lined up by the middle of the block.”

2010PBASBobBrady.jpg2010PBASRonMohr.jpgFirst round leader Bob Brady (left), Santa Monica, Calif., slipped to third place with 2,672. Don Moser, Murrieta, Calif., is fourth with 2,671. Tom Baker of King, N.C., trying for a third Senior U.S. Open crown having won the 2005 and ’06 tournaments, is fifth with 2,636.

Reigning PBA Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr (right) of Eagle River, Alaska is ninth with 2,610. Two-time defending champion Wayne Webb of Columbus, Ohio, trying for this third consecutive Senior U.S. Open title is tied for 12th after two rounds with 2,583.

The 226-player field will bowl one more six-game qualifying block Wednesday after which the field will be cut to the top 57 players for another nine-game qualifying round Thursday morning.

The field will then be cut to the top 24 players for three eight-game round-robin match play rounds conducted Thursday and Friday to determine the top four for the stepladder finals scheduled for Friday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific.

Bowling fans can check out coverage of the match play portions of the Senior U.S. Open on pba.com’s Xtra Frame video service.
