Wayne Webb sets record to lead first round in PBA Senior Columbus Open

04/26/10

2010 PBA Senior Tour #2

HPL Lanes in Columbus, Ohio (April 24-27, 2010)

2009PBAS08WayneWebb.jpgProfessional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Wayne Webb (pictured left) of Columbus bowled a record 2,119 eight-game pinfall Sunday to lead the first round of the PBA Senior Columbus Open at HP Lanes.

Webb averaged 264.8 with games of 279, 248, 269, 289, 239, 279, 237 and 279, to break the previous eight-game record of 2,094 set by Mickey Spiezio in 1991.

Webb, who finished second in the season-opening Senior Dayton Classic last week, made a change in his delivery in the second round of that event which he credited for helping his pin carry.

"I took some advice from some friends last week who told me I needed to loft the ball more to get it farther out on the lane," Webb said. "That has enabled me to carry better which is very important on a high-scoring condition like we're bowling on here."

2010PBASRonMohr.jpgWebb, the 2008 and 2009 Senior U.S. Open winner and a 20-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour titlist, holds a 13-pin lead over fellow Hall of Famer Mark Williams of Beaumont, Texas in second, who also eclipsed the old record with a 2,106 pinfall. Reigning Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr (right) of Anchorage, Alaska is third with 2,083.

. Webb recently moved to Columbus to open Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl and is pulling double duty this week working at the center when he's not bowling in the tournament.

"A proprietor's work is never done," the 52-year-old Webb said. "When I finish bowling each day here (HP Lanes), I'll have to head over to my center and get to work."

The 134-player field will bowl another eight-game qualifying round Monday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 players who will advance to best-of-five match play beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m. Match play continues all day Tuesday with the Round of 8 and championship rounds scheduled for 6 p.m.

PBA.com's Xtra Frame video service will provide final-day coverage of the Senior Columbus Open on Tuesday.
