Danish duo wins first gold medal in 23rd European Youth Championships

Carsten W. Hansen and Mik Stampe team to win Boys Doubles

2010EYCLogo.jpg Carsten W. Hansen and Mik Stampe, Denmark, the No. 2 seed after the six-game preliminaries defeated top seeded Antonios Zafras and Vasileios Stefopoulos, Greece, 427-387, to win the first gold medal of the 23rd European Youth Championships at Plaza Bowling in St. Maximin, France.

The Greek bowlers, who led the Danes by 13 pins averaging 212.42 in the preliminaries, eliminated No. 4 seeded Russians Mikhail Belenkiy and Roman Starchenkov in the first semifinal match.

The eventual champions survived a close semifinal match against No. 3 seeded Latvians Daniels Vezis and Arturs Levikins, 411-409.

Antonios Zafras/Vasileios Stefopoulos earned silver while Daniels Vezis/Arturs Levikins and Mikhail Belenkiy/Roman Starchenkov shared the bronze medal.

Jan Cepelak, Czech Republic, and Patryk Preus, Poland, each rolled a 300 game during the preliminaries on Monday, March 29.
