2009 World Cup champion Caroline Lagrange falls to Wong in women's title match

2010BWCCANNCMichaelSchmidt.jpg2010EBT05CarolineLagrange.jpgDefending champions Michael Schmidt (pictured left) of Tyndall, Manitoba, and Caroline Lagrange (right), St-Leonard, Quebec, advanced to the men's and women's title match in the 2010 Bowling World Cup Canadian National Championships at Fairview Lanes in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada last weekend.

Top seeded Schmidt flew past third-seeded Robbie Scerbo, Winnipeg, Manitoba, 245-142, to easily claim the men's title with the opportunity to compete at the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in Zagreb, Croatia, October 15-24, 2010.

The semifinal match of the three-player stepladder final was a low-scoring affair in which Scerbo topped No. 2 seed, Ryan Reid, Campbell River, British Columbia, 171-153.

It was Schmidt's fifth victory in the event since 2005, the year he won the BWC in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In the following years he finished 3rd in Caracas, Venezuela (2006), 4th in St. Petersburg, Russia (2007) and 2nd last year in Melaka, Malaysia.

Lagrange, who won the women's World Cup title in 2009, had a shot at the title and the chance to defend her World Cup title when she defeated Jennifer Park, Nanaimo, British Columbia, in a rematch of last year's title match, 204-191, to advance to the final.

2010BWCCANNCFeliciaWong_small.jpgUnlike the semifinal match, Lagrange was forced to beat the number one seed, Felicia Wong (left), Calgary, Alberta, twice to win the title. Things started well for Lagrange as she posted a 226 over Wong’s 216. However, Wong rebounded with a 232-203 in the final game to wrap up the title and to become Canada’s female representative at the World Cup in Zagreb. For Wong this will be her first BWC appearance.

Sixteen provincial champions (8 women and 8 men who won the 8 game provincial qualifiers) took part in the 2010 BWC Canadian National Championships as well as the two defending champion. After two rounds of eight games, both Schmidt and Wong earned the top stepladder positions averaging 238.7 and 225.4 respectively.
