Smalllwood ends year with BWAA Kegel Bowler of the Month honor

Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Michigan, has been named the December 2009 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the Bowling Writers Association of America.
Smallwood captured his first Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title, the PBA World Championship, by defeating reigning PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott, 244-228.
In a close vote, Smallwood edged out Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, winner of the PBA Red, White, and Blue Open presented by the USBC and the PBA Midwest/Southwest Region Wichita Bowling for Wishes Super Regional.
Smallwood's year-long rise from unemployed General Motors assembly line worker to PBA champion has captured headlines in numerous high profile national and local electronic, print, and online media outlets.
The rise began with a third place finish in the 2009-10 PBA Tour Trials and followed by a 222-175 semifinal loss to Jason Belmonte in the PBA Scorpion Championship.
Other nominees capturing votes were Scott Norton, San Francisco, winner of the PBA Regional Players Invitational, Brenda Edwards, Mansfield, Texas, 2010 Women's USBC Team USA Trials champion, and John Janawicz, Winter Haven, Fla., 2010 Men's USBC Team USA Trials champion.
