First Monica Brooks Memorial draws 173 entries from four southwest states
United States
Plano Super Bowl in Plano, Texas (Jan. 2-3, 2010)
The first Monica Brooks Memorial Scholarship Tournament, honoring the daughter of Texas Proprietor Jamie Brooks, who lost her life in a tragic auto accident in October, was a big success.
The event drew adult /youth doubles teams from four southwest states – Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana - totaling 173 entries at Plano Super Bowl in Plano, Texas.
"We were very pleased with the turnout," said event director Joyce Claus. "More than half the entries came from outside the area, so that is a good sign that the event will continue to do well in the future."
The winners were Wyatt Caldwell and his dad, Warren Caldwell (pictured) from Richardson, Texas. The Caldwells defeated Rachel and Patrick Carr, Siloam Springs, Arkansas in the final match, two-games-to-none, to win the $1,000 SMART Scholarship award. The Carrs received $750 for second place.
The qualifying rounds, consisting of four Baker games, were completed on January 2. After qualifying, teams were allowed to throw out their low game, and their best 3-game totals determined the top 16 who made the finals and received scholarship awards.
The round of 16 was played in best 2 out of 3 Baker games format with the winners advancing. The remaining top 8 finalists were seeded in brackets and again the winners of the best 2 out of 3 game matches advanced.
The remaining 4 teams were seeded in brackets. The 2 winning teams then rolled off for first place and the 2 losing team rolled off for third & fourth place.
