Mathias Ã…rup shoots big series to lead Final Round One in Qatar
12/18/09

Swede Mathias Ã…rup (pictured left) rolled games of 204, 241, 256, 222, 277 and 244 to lead the players seeded 13th through 48th after qualifying in Final Round 1 at the 9th Qatar International Open Friday at Qatar Bowling Center in Doha, Qatar. Ã…rup felled 1444 pins, an average of 240.67, to lead the field of 36 cashers by at least 106 pins.
Zulmazran Zulkifli (right), Malaysia, was a distant second with 1338. Tim Mack, United States, who shot one of two perfect games in qualifying, was third with 1337 including a 289 game.
Andrew Frawley, Australia, was 4th with 1337, with Robert Andersson, Sweden, in 5th place with 1302 including a 297 in game #6.

Kim Bolleby, Sweden, took the 18th and final qualifying post with 1238 or an average of 206.33. George Frilingos, Australia, who hit the cutoff number in qualifying, made the second cut four pins ahead of Bolleby in 17th place.
Two out of six women in the round made the second cut. World Cup champion Caroline Lagrange (left), Canada, had 1277 series including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour, to land in 11th place, with Patricia Luoto (right), Germany, in 12th with 1269.
Among those failing to make the cut 7th Qatar Open winner Kirsten Penny, England (22nd, 1215), current ranking leader Nicki Ainge from England (28th, 1189), Germany's No. 1 Tina Hulsch (29th, 1188) and defending Qatar Open champion Nina Flack, Sweden (33rd, 1131).

When Ainge (pictured left) made the cut as one of just seven women which meant she would at least earn 46 ranking points, she had sealed the victory in the 2009 European Bowling Tour women's rankings.
As her nearest rival Nicole Sanders (right), Netherlands, failed to advance and with third-placed Flack, the defending ranking champion, already 55 points off the pace for first place (the winner gets 100 ranking points, maximum 54 points more than Ainge), she had put the title out of reach for her rivals.
The 9th Qatar Open is the 15th and final event on the 2009 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Major's". The EBT has announced that the 2010 edition will be upgraded to "Platinum", the highest status of the Tour besides Gold, Silver and Satellite.
A total of 48 players - the top 38 qualifiers and the top 3 each from Dec. 12 and 13 squads plus the top 4 from the Desperado Squad - advanced to the finals on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18-19, 2009.
The top 6 qualifiers bypass the first two rounds, while places 7-12 received one bye. The other 36 players bowled six games from scratch to cut to the top 18. Those 18 plus qualifiers 7-12 will bowl six games from scratch in Round 2. The top 10 will advance and join the top six qualifiers in Round 3.
Those 16 will bowl six games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will bowl another six games with the pinfall from Round 3 being carried forward. The top 4 will advance to the championship round. All matches over two games total pinfall.
No. 1 bowls No. 4 and No. 2 meets No. 3. The winners will advance to the championship match to bowl for the title and the 30.000 Euro top prize (approx. 43,865 U.S. Dollar). The runner-up will be consoled with 15.000 Euro.
