The Swedish Bowling Federation has selected Helén Johnsson as Swedish Bowler of the Year 2009. The 33 year-old multiple World Championship medalist had another outstanding year, highlighted by a silver medal in All Events in the Women's World Championships in Las Vegas in August.
"The World Championship performance is my best memory from this year. I am really proud of the All Events silver medal", Johnsson stated.
She was very satisfied with a first and second place finish on the Swedish Super Six Tour and also with defending the Swedish national championship for 8-player teams with her club Spader Dam from Helsingborg.
On several occasions Johnsson has shown that she has the ability to challenge the top male bowlers, sometimes even without using the much-debated 8 pins handicap generally given to the women.
In the Jönköping Super Six event she was the No. 1 seed for the stepladder final, a position she would have taken even without handicap, and during the Swedish Ranking Championship, in which no handicap is given, she was in 7th place after 22 games on four different lane patterns.
After nine years on the Swedish national team, Johnsson is still eager to develop her bowling skills, and continues her systematic training which also includes quite a lot of physical exercises.
"I work out in the gym approximately three hours a week and also spend a couple of hours on fitness training. I believe that my comprehensive approach to training has helped me to keep a constantly high level as a competitive bowler", she said.
In regard to the year 2010, Johnsson defines her priorities. "The Women's European Championship in Riga is number one, and then I hope to qualify for the QubicaAMF World Cup for the seventh straight year".
