Tim Mack shoots second perfecto of the tournament

2009BWCHussainAlSuwaidi.jpg2009BWCRemyOng2.jpg2008 Asian Bowling Federation ranking champion and current ranking leader Hussain Al-Suwaidi (pictured left) posted a 1421 six-game series Tuesday evening at Qatar Bowling Center in Doha, Qatar en route to overtake the lead in the qualifying of the 9th Qatar International Open.

Al-Suwaidi had games of 212, 248, 225, 244, 225 and 267 in the 8th of 16 qualifying squads to overtake his compatriot Naif Oqab, who led since Squad 4 with 1394, by 27 pins. The lefty slipped one spot to second place and I s followed by another two lefties, Remy Ong (right) from Singapore and another UAE bowler, Shaker Al-Hassan, with 1367 and 1353, respectively.

Sami Noor, Bahrain, led the 9th qualifying squad on Tuesday night with 1337 to move into 8th place in the overall qualifying standings.

PBA Player of the Year (2003-04) Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, sits in 9th place with 1330. Rounding out the top 10 is Germany's Tina Hulsch (below left), who is the best of five women among the top 38 qualifiers with 1325 including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

2009BWCTinaHulsch3.jpg2009VONinaFlack.jpgKirsten Penny, England, who won the 7th Qatar Open in January 2008, is 13th with 1316, followed by 2008 Vienna Open champion Patricia Luoto, Germany, in 14th place with 1314. Defending Qatar Open champion Nina Flack (right), Sweden, is 28th with 1277, while Nicole Sanders, Netherlands, is 34th with 1264.

PBA exempt bowler Tim Mack (below left), who has won the Samho Korea Cup earlier this year, set the highlight on Tuesday when he rolled the second 300 game of the tournament in Squad 8 (Mansoor Al-Awamy, Qatar, was the first). Despite the perfecto, Mack was unable to improve on his 1317 total from squad 7, which is good for 12th in the overall standings.

Qualifying runs through Thursday, Dec. 17 with the final qualifying squad 16 scheduled for 9 p.m. The single-game "Desperado Squad" will start around Midnight. A total of 48 players - the top 38 qualifiers and the top 3 each from Dec. 12 and 13 squads plus the top 4 from the Desperado Squad - advance to the finals on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18-19, 2009.

The top 6 qualifiers will bypass the first two rounds, while places 7-12 will receive one bye. The other 36 players will bowl six games from scratch to cut to the top 18. Those 18 plus qualifiers 7-12 will bowl six games from scratch. The top 10 will advance and join the top six qualifiers in Round 3.

Those 16 will bowl six games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will bowl another six games with the pinfall from Round 3 being carried forward. The top 4 will advance to the championship round. All matches over two games total pinfall.

No. 1 bowls No. 4 and No. 2 meets No. 3. The winners will advance to the championship match to bowl for the title and the 30.000 Euro top prize (approx. 43,865 U.S. Dollar). The runner-up will be consoled with 15.000 Euro.
