Oquab leads 9th Qatar International Open after the first weekend

Al-Awamy shoots first 300 game of the season-ending EBT event

2008KSANaifOqab.jpg2008SOMansoorElAwamy.jpgNaif Oqab (pictured left), UAE, led the fourth qualifying squad in the 9th Qatar International Open Sunday evening at Qatar Bowling Center in Doha, Qatar en route to overtake the qualifying lead with 1394 pinfall total and an average of 232.33.

Oqab started with games of 255, 220, 237, 227 and 279 but failed to become the first player with a 1400 series after finishing with 176. His compatriot Shaker Al-Hassan, who led after day one slipped to second place with 1353.

Abdulla Haroon is the top player from the host country in third place with 1308. Mohammed Al-Zaidan sits in fourth place with 1300. Mansoor Al-Awamy (right) posted the first 300 game of this year's event in the second game of Squad 3. Al-Awamy, who had four 190s in the first five games finished with 212 for 1290 total to lead the squad and to move into fifth place in the overall qualifying standings.

Dutch Nicole Sanders (right) is the top-ranked woman in the field with 1264 including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

Qualifying runs through Thursday, Dec. 17 with the final qualifying squad 16 scheduled for 9 p.m. The single-game "Desperado Squad" will start around Midnight. A total of 48 players - the top 38 qualifiers and the top 3 each from Dec. 12 and 13 squads plus the top 4 from the Desperado Squad - advance to the finals on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18-19, 2009.

The top 6 qualifiers will bypass the first two rounds, while places 7-12 will receive one bye. The other 36 players will bowl six games from scratch to cut to the top 18. Those 18 plus qualifiers 7-12 will bowl six games from scratch. The top 10 will advance and join the top six qualifiers in Round 3.

Those 16 will bowl six games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will bowl another six games with the pinfall from Round 3 being carried forward. The top 4 will advance to the championship round. All matches over two games total pinfall.

No. 1 bowls No. 4 and No. 2 meets No. 3. The winners will advance to the championship match to bowl for the title and the 30.000 Euro top prize (approx. 43,865 U.S. Dollar). The runner-up will be consoled with 15.000 Euro.
