EBT ranking leaders Palermaa, Barrett add their names to the leaderboard in Nuneaton

2009EBT14OskuPalermaa.jpg2009BWCIsabelleSacco3.jpgWith 7 out of 15 qualifying squads in the books, Phil Scammell, England, leads the qualifying in the Ebonite English Open 2009 currently underway at Lakeside Superbowl Nuneaton in Nuneaton, England. Scammell felled 1421 pins in Squad 5 on Thursday afternoon, an average of 236.83 over six games.

Two-time defending ranking champion and current men's ranking leader Osku Palermaa (pictured left), Finland, started Squad 7 with five games between 244 and 208 before he finished with 279 to shoot into second place in the overall qualifying standings with 1399 or an average of 233.17.

Nick Froggatt, England, was just one pin behind with 1398 including back-to-back 250s to move into third place. His compatriot Matt Miller slipped two spots to fourth with 1390.

Isabelle Sacco (above right), France, and Norway's Heidi Thorstensen were third and fourth in Squad 7 en route to position themselves in 5th and 6th place on the leaderboard with 1390 and 1345, respectively, including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

Rounding out the top 10 is Squad 6 leader Dominic Barrett (pictured left), England. The 2008 EBT ranking runner-up and also the No. 2 in the current ranking used a high game of 266 to check in with 1322 (220.33).

3-time EBT ranking champion and current No. 3, Paul Moor is 19th with 1287, while defending English Open champion, Kirsten Penny (right) sits in 23rd place with 1278 including handicap.

Danny Ayling, all from England, holds the 46th and final spot to advance with 1190 or an average of 198.33.

2009EnglishOpenLogo.jpg The Ebonite English Open 2009 is the 14th and penultimate stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and the last of the Tour's four "Challenger" events. The tournament will be held from Tuesday Dec. 2 through Sunday Dec. 6, 2009 at Lakeside Superbowl Nuneaton, a 24-laner in Nuneaton, England. Players will compete for total prize money of 32.400 British Pounds or approx. 35.550 Euro.

Qualifying continues on Friday with another four squads at 9am, 1pm, 5pm and 9pm. and ends on Saturday, Dec. 5, with squads 12-15 and the ultimate chance to qualify, the one-game Desperado Squad at 11pm.

All players bowl at least one six-game block with unlimited re-entries allowed. A total of 50 players will advance to the finals, the top 46 from the qualifying plus the top 4 Desperados. The top 2 qualifying leaders earn four byes, places 3-6 receive three and places 7-10 get two byes.

The other 40 finalists will bowl 6 games starting from scratch. The top 24 advance to the second round and play another 3 games with the pinfall from Round 1 carried forward. The top 12 advance to best-of-three games single-elimination finals.

In each of the matches in the single-elimination finals, the highest seeded player will meet the lowest seeded player, the second highest seeded player will meet the second lowest seeded player, etc.

The field will be cut to 14, 8, 4 and then 2, who will bowl for the title with 5.000 British Pounds or almost 5.500 Euro going to the winner. England's Kirsten Penny is the defending champion.
