Diplomats aim to raise funds for the victims of recent series of typhoons and floods

2009BWCPaengNepomuceno.jpgDiplomats and Filipinos in Ankara, Turkey's capital city, are now eagerly awaiting the visit of six-time World Bowling Champion Rafael "Paeng" Nepomuceno (pictured) next Wednesday. Nepomuceno is a Guinness Book of World Records-holder, and the recognized greatest international bowler in the history of the sport.

He is due to arrive in Istanbul on December 2 with his wife, the former Pinky Puyat. The Champion will play exhibition games and participate in the Philippine Embassy-organized "Diplomats' Bowling Tournament" scheduled in Ankara on Saturday, December 5, at the "Play Planet" bowling center at Ankara's modern Panora Shopping Mall.

As early as last month, Diplomats from various embassies and diplomatic missions have already started practicing their bowling games in preparation for their participation in the "Paeng Nepomuceno Cup".

Nepomuceno, hailed by the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ) as the "International Bowler of the Millennium" and who is also an inductee in the WBW Bowling Hall of Fame, has been designated as Ambassador of Goodwill by the United Nations.

He will actually compete in the bowling tournament with Diplomats in Ankara on December 5, as well as with Turkish and Filipino bowling aficionados in Istanbul on December 6, Sunday.

A large number of diplomats and other bowling enthusiasts is expected to register and participate in the two bowling tournaments. At stake in the competition are special trophies as well as other valuable prizes. The champion, who is a USBC Silver coach, will also conduct "bowling clinics" as part of the event.

According to Ambassador Pedro Chan of the Philippine Embassy in Ankara, "The special bowling tournaments in Ankara and in Istanbul form part of the year-long activities marking the 60th Anniversary of Philippines-Turkey Diplomatic Relations this year. We also aim to raise funds to be donated to the victims of the recent series of typhoons and floods that devastated the Philippines where over 1,000 lives were lost and 2 million people have been dislocated from their homes and continue to suffer from illnesses and related problems brought about by those destructive natural calamities."

Nepomuceno said that he looks forward to participating in the bowling tournament in Ankara and in Istanbul, and "more so for being able to help the Embassy's drive to raise funds for the typhoon and flood victims in the Philippines." He added, "Almost everybody has been directly or indirectly affected by the typhoons. I thank the Philippine Embassy for organizing this bowling event and allowing me to make a direct contribution."

The bowling tournament sponsors include ETIHAD Airlines, RIXOS Grand Ankara Hotel, the 7-Star CIRAHAN Palace Kempinski hotel in Istanbul, ESEN Moving Company, IZELTAS Handtools owned and managed by Philippine Honorary Consul Ender Yorgancilar in Izmir City, Istanbul-based Filipino-Turkish painter and art teacher Rowena Ulayan-Tuscioglu, Turkish businessman and Philippine Honorary Consul General Sukru Diyab in Mersin City, "Play Planet" Bowling Center in Ankara, and many other individuals and business companies in Ankara and in Istanbul.

Istanbul Filipino community coordinators Mr. Nilo Nicdao and Ms. Cathy Mirano are helping the Philippine Embassy in insuring a successful bowling tournament in Istanbul.
