Jang, Yanagawa, Harimoto, Kuji refuse to fall, win ASBC titles in Masters

2009ASBCLogo.jpg 2009ASBCSeniorMastersMen.jpgSeon Myeon Jang from Korea (men senior) and Honami Yanagawa (women senior), Yusuke Harimoto (men grand senior) and Junko Kuji (women grand senior), all from Japan, who led the Masters finals of the 10th Asian Seniors Bowling Championships after eight games refused to fall in the second block and cruised to the title.

Jang (pictured right, center) added 1887 to the 1912 from day one and won a total of 12 of his 16 games to win the gold medal in men senior Masters with 3919 total and the field-best 237.44 average. Bob Whybrow and Garry Crick, both Australia, earned the silver and bronze medal with 3850 and 3816.

No changes among the top 3 in the women senior division (below left). Yanagawa added 1720 to the 1814 and 50 bonus to the 60 bonus from day one to win the title with 3644 and an average of 220.88. Her compatriot Chieko Hirata narrowed the gap to 26 pins to take the silver medal with 3618. Singles champion Ivena Heald, New Zealand, was a distant third with 3442.

Harimoto (pictured right, center) out-bowled his opponents in both blocks, receiving 5 pins handicap each game. He finished with 3976 total including an 11-4-1 match play record to win the title by 205 pins. Toshiake Betchaku was second with 3771, while Greig Lyas, Australia, took the bronze with 3736.

Kuji maintained a slim 6-pin lead over team mate Kazumi Koike to win the gold medal with 3464 to 3458. Koike had to settle for silver despite a 13-3 won-loss record. Bronze went to Barbara Richmond, Australia, with 3300.

The top 16 players from the All Events standings in each division advanced to the Masters finals to bowl 15 games round robin match play plus position round starting from scratch.

The 10th Asian Seniors Bowling Championships drew 219 players - 140 men (70 seniors and 70 grand seniors) and 79 women (44 seniors and 35 grand seniors) from seven countries - Australia, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and the Philippines - who bowled for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, four-player Team, All Events and Masters.
