Mike Machuga wins his first career PBA title
11/14/05
Mike Machuga proved that good things come to those who wait, as he won his first career Denny's PBA Tour title by defeating Bill O'Neill in the final match of the 2005 Greater Omaha Classic, 256-245, Sunday at Thunderbowl. Machuga entered the week winless in his first 79 career events and was 0-3 in title matches prior to Sunday's win.
The 29-year-old struck on his first five shots before a failed 4-9 split conversion in the 6th frame. O'Neill, a 24-year-old making his first career televised finals appearance, couldn't take advantage, however, leaving a 9-pin on his next shot. Machuga clinched the match by striking on his first two shots in the 10th frame.
"That's what I've dreamed about, coming through in the clutch," said Machuga (Erie, Pa.), who earned $40,000. "I've been bowling well for quite some time and things are starting to go my way."
Machuga, who bowled at the University of Nebraska from 1994-96, advanced to the title match by defeating David Traber, 225-184, in the semifinals. Machuga struck in frames 4-7 while Traber, searching for his 5th career Tour title, struck just once over the same span.
In the first semifinal, O'Neill overcame opens in the 7th and 9th frames by striking out in the 10th to defeat Wes Malott, who was making his fourth consecutive televised finals appearance of the season, 223-215.
O'Neill earned $20,000 for his second place finish while Malott and Traber earned $10,000 apiece for their 3rd and 4th place finishes.
The Denny's PBA Tour moves to Milwaukee, Wis., for the season's first major, the USBC Masters, Nov. 14-20 at AMF Bowlero Lanes. The nationally televised ESPN finals take place Sunday, Nov. 20 at U.S. Cellular Arena at 1 p.m. ET.

Malott, ranked No. 1 in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, will look to become the second bowler this season to win back-to-back titles. Tommy Jones won the first two events of the season.
The Austin, Texas native averaged 255.14 in the seven games, including a 298 in game seven to clinch the match. He nearly had a triplicate, winning games 3-5 by scores of 268-259, 268-247 and 269-268. He struck in his last six shots in game five to beat Weber by one pin.
"My concentration has been unbelievable, my ball selection has been excellent and I've been making the right decisions," said Malott, who won his first career title last week in the 2005 Mile High Classic. "Like I've been saying, it's making the shots at the right time and I've been doing that. To do it against one of the best ever is unbelievable."
Malott will take on Bill O'Neill, who will be looking for his first title in his first career televised championship round. O'Neill, who at 24 is the youngest bowler on Tour, defeated Mike DeVaney, 4-2.
Mike Machuga defeated Doug Kent, 4-1, and will face David Traber in the second semifinal. Machuga, who bowled nearby at the University of Nebraska, finished second the last time the Tour came to Council Bluffs in the 2003 Banquet Open. He'll be looking for his first career Tour title in 79 events.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from Thunderbowl Sunday, Nov. 13 at Noon CST.

Couch, who last won the 2003 Pepsi Open, averaged 242.43 in his second seven-game set Thursday after he averaged 258.71 in his opening seven-game session earlier in the day. "My timing was really good today," said Couch, who shot 224, 300 and 258 to start his second set. "I've been struggling the past few weeks with timing, but everything came together today."
Couch, a left-hander with 11 Tour titles from Clermont, Fla., enters the best-of-seven-games match play Round of 32 as the top seed. He'll face Eugene McCune, who was 32nd with 3,202. McCune, who finished second in the Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round on Wednesday, beat out Rick Steelsmith by three pins for the final match play spot.
Michael Haugen Jr. finished second with 3,424 and will face Chris Hayden, who was 31st with 3,203. Haugen also had two perfect games and will be looking for his first career Tour win in eight full seasons.
PBA Hall of Famer and 40-time title winner Walter Ray Williams Jr. qualified 28th with 3,212. Williams will face last week's title winner Wes Malott, who averaged 242.14 and finished fifth with 3,390.
Friday features all match play with the rounds of 32, 16 and 8 starting at 9 a.m. CST. Match play is single-elimination, best-of-seven games. The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Nov. 13 at Noon CST.

300 games - Jason Couch, D.J. Archer, David Traber, Chris Loschetter, Mike DeVaney.
The left-hander from Clermont, Fla., is looking to get back in the winner's circle this season after not winning a title last season for the first time since 1997. The 11-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist used a bigger hook than normal to stay on pace with the high scores.
"The lanes are hooking more than they have the first two weeks. When I can open up and hook it a little more, it's to my advantage," said Couch, who will look to enter Friday's round of 32 match play as the top seed. "I haven't done very well in my matches the last two weeks. Any week you go in as the top seed, you feel a lot more comfortable."
Couch came out of the gate fast with a 269. He averaged 240.50 over his next four games before finishing the session with 20 consecutive strikes. He fired a 280 in game six before his 300.
Two bowlers looking for their first career Tour titles trail Couch. Chris Collins is second with 1,767, while Michael Haugen Jr. is third with 1,737. Haugen fired two of the four 300-games in the first session.
Commissioner's Exemption Hugh Miller is fifth with 1,722. The 23-year Tour veteran and seven-time titlist is looking to regain an exemption after finishing 40th in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings, one spot shy of an exemption.
All 64 bowlers will return for another seven games tonight at 6 p.m. CST, with the top 32 advancing to Friday's play. The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from Thunderbowl Sunday, Nov. 13 at Noon CST.

Miller, a 36-year-old kitchen manager from Lincoln, Neb., led the round with a 1,760 seven-game pinfall Wednesday at Thunderbowl after averaging a torrid 262.40 over his final five games.
"I'm looking forward to [Thursday's round of 64]," said Miller, a left-hander who bowled a handful of Tour events in 1993 before dropping his PBA membership. "I have some confidence after today. I think I'll do fairly well and try to relax a little bit."
Eugene McCune was second with 1,744 after shooting 258 in games one, four and six. McCune finished 47th in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings, missing out an exemption by eight spots.

PBA National Tour #3
Thunderbowl in Council Bluffs, Iowa (Nov. 9-13, 2005)
ET.

Wes Malott makes his 4th consecutive television appearance
Wes Malott ushered in a new era on the Denny's PBA Tour, and he did it by beating one of the Tour's legends. Malott became the first bowler since Walter Ray Williams Jr. in 2001 to make four consecutive television appearances by defeating 31-time Tour titlist and PBA Hall of Famer, Pete Weber, 4-3, Friday in the 2005 Greater Omaha Classic at Thunderbowl.Malott, ranked No.

Jason Couch leads Round of 64 after first session
Jason Couch finished the first of two-seven game qualifying blocks in style by firing a 300 in game seven Thursday to take the lead in the 2005 Greater Omaha Classic at Thunderbowl. Couch leads a high-scoring field, averaging 258.71 with a 1,811 seven-game pinfall.

Seven players advance to Round of 64 in Iowa
Rick Miller imagined his week in the 2005 Greater Omaha Classic would consist of just seven games. Little did he know that he'd lead the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Qualifying Round and advance to Thursday's Round of 64.Miller, a 36-year-old kitchen manager from Lincoln, Neb., led the round with a 1,760 seven-game pinfall Wednesday at Thunderbowl after averaging a torrid 262.40 over his final five games.
Tyler Jensen was third with 1,715 while lefty Chris Hayden was fourth with 1,713 and Steve Rogers fifth with 1,711. 10-time Tour titlist Bryan Goebel was sixth with 1,686. Lonnie Waliczek used the sole 300-game to finish seventh with 1,676 and beat out 13-time titlist Randy Pedersen for the final non-exempt PBA member spot in this week's event.
Normally, the top four non-exempt PBA members advance, but with exempt bowlers Amleto Monacelli and Tommy Jones skipping the event, six PBA members and the top amateur advanced into tomorrow's Round of 64.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Nov. 13 at Noon CST.
