2009USBCOCRobertCarterMichaelWarren.jpgRobert Carter and Michael Warren (l-r) of Clinton, N.C., are tournament first-timers with a flair for the dramatic, and the two right-handers now are in position to win Classified Doubles at the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.

Because they enjoy bowling as much as they enjoy Las Vegas, Carter and Warren thought it would be fun to take a vacation and have a bowling experience unlike any other at the same time.

Less than a week after deciding to make the trip, the two now find themselves at the top of the standings with a 1,250 doubles total. Melanie Sweet and Lashawn Farrish of Bowie, Md., previously held the lead with 1,220.

"We didn't know if we'd even be able to get into the tournament, but we wanted to bowl, and we wanted to come to Las Vegas, so we decide to come," Carter said. "I never thought we'd even come close to doing anything like this, especially after the way we bowled yesterday. We couldn't find anything out there."

After shooting 481 and 500 in team, respectively, Carter, 54, and Warren, 50, decided they needed a new strategy for doubles and singles. They each tried to play a different line during practice and then picked the one that worked best. They ended up playing outside, and Carter led the way with a 636 doubles series, while Warren contributed 614.

"We found a good line, and even when we messed up, we got some breaks, and everything fell into place," Carter said. "We didn't get too excited when we were done because we didn't know what we needed to beat. When we found out, it was hard to believe because there are so many good bowlers from all over."

Before marching down Center Aisle on Wednesday, the pair had no idea what to expect from their first time on the tournament lanes.

"Some of the guys in our league have bowled in this tournament before, but didn't tell us anything about it," said Warren, who travels an hour with Carter to bowl league at Boulevard Lanes in Goldsboro, N.C. "I wasn't sure what to expect, and I could believe how big the place was. I was really nervous, and that never really went away."

Now, Carter and Warren will have just 24 hours to wait to see if they will be champions at the Open Championships. The record 154-day run of this year's tournament will end Friday afternoon. The final doubles and singles squad will hit the lanes at Cashman Center at 11:40 a.m. and conclude just after 2 p.m.

Warren added 578 in singles for a 1,697 all-events total, while Carter had 570 in singles for a 1,687 all-events effort.

2009USBCOCSusanNixonGregGo.jpgOn Wednesday night, Susan Nixon and Greg Go of Las Vegas also made a run at the Classified Doubles lead, but fell short. They are now third with 1,211. Go paced the pair with 662, and Nixon contributed 549.

"We're very happy and did not expect it," said Nixon, who finished second in Classified Doubles at the 2003 event in Knoxville, Tenn. "We didn't even look at the scores because we figured we didn't have a chance."

Go added 560 in singles and 536 in team for a 1,758 all-events total. Nixon finished with 570 in singles and 490 in team for 1,609.

In order to be eligible for the Classified Division, individual bowlers must have an entering average of 180 or below. Doubles pairs must have a combined average of 360 or below, and teams must be at 900 or below.
