English girls lead Team event at halfway point in 22nd European Youth Championships

14 girls teams took on the lanes at Baltiska Bowlinghallen in Malmo, Sweden, on Wednesday morning for the first three of six games in the 4-player Team event in the 22nd European Youth Championships.

England's Danielle Hopcroft, Katrina MacIver, Laura Ellis and Nikki Beard rolled games of 885, 796 and 786 to take the lead with 2467 pinfall total and an average of 205.58. Hopcroft led the team with the field-best 675 series, or an average of 225.00.

Trailing England by 20 pins are Elin Adolfsson, Isabell Hultin, Joline Persson Planefors and Sandra Andersson from the host country Sweden. The gold and bronze medalists in Doubles improved steadily during the day with games of 799, 817 and 831 to sit in second place with 2447 and an average of 203.92.

Liat Vizenfeld, Mor Dayan, Shahaf Antin and Shir Levy from Israel were the third team with a 200-plus average on the first day. The Israelis used three consistent games (815, 799, 789) for 2403, or an average of 200.25.

Rounding out the top 4, who will advance to the finals after another three games on Thursday are Finns Jenni Styrman, Roosa Lundén, Salla Mäkelä and Sanna Pasanen, who checked in with 2300 (191.67).

The next six teams are less than 130 pins off the pace for the finals: 5. Netherlands, 2259 6. Germany, 2244 7. Russia, 2196 8. France, 2193 9. Norway, 2187 and 10. Denmark, 2173.

The top four teams will battle it out for the medals on Thursday evening. The No. 1 seed meets the No. 4 qualifier and the No. 2 seed takes on No. 3. The winners of that one-game match will bowl for gold while the losers will share the bronze medal.

The EYC 2009 are divided in two divisions - boys and girls. Each team consists of maximum four male and four female players, who must not have reached the age of 19 before August 31st, 2009.

The players compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Teams, All Events (18 games) and Masters (top 24 in All Events, single-elimination, best-of-three games).
