Swedish girls 1,2 after Doubles preliminaries in 22nd European Youth Championships

The girls from the host country Sweden, Elin Adolfsson/Isabell Hultin and Joline Persson Planefors/Sandra Andersson finished the six-game preliminaries in the Doubles competition of the 22nd European Youth Championships in first and second place. They will Joining the Swedes in the semifinals are No. 3 Liat Vizenfeld/Mor Dayan from Israel and No. 4 Daria Pająk/Magda Stępien from Poland.

Adolfsson and Hultin set the pace in the first of two squads with 2495 six-game total and an average of 207.92 and never looked back. Adolfsson posted the second-best individual series of all 70 players with 1298 (216.33) and Hultin added 1197.

Their team mates Persson and Andersson led the second squad with 2450 (204.17) en route to earn the No. 2 seed for the one-game single-elimination finals of the top 4 duos. Andersson led the way with 1249 and Persson contributed 1201.

Trailing Persson/Andersson by just 23 pins in Squad 2 to land in third place were 2007 EYC silver medalists in Trios, Liat Vizenfeld and Mor Dayan, Israel. Vizenfeld used the highest game of the girls competition thus far, 268 in game #5, for the field-best 1311 series, while Dayan felled 1116 for 2427 pinfall total (202.25).

Daria Pająk and Magda Stępien, Poland, beat out Katharina Koch and Sandra Matz, Germany, for the fourth and final spot by mere one pin, 2408 to 2407. The Germans finished with a 423 game (to Poland's 380) but fell one pin short of the finals to settle for fifth place.

The top four doubles will battle it out for the medals on Tuesday afternoon simultaneously with the Boys Doubles finals. The No. 1 seed meets the No. 4 qualifier and the No. 2 seed takes on No. 3. The winners of that one-game match will bowl for gold while the losers will share the bronze medal.

The EYC 2009 are divided in two divisions - boys and girls. Each team consists of maximum four male and four female players, who must not have reached the age of 19 before August 31st, 2009.

The players compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Teams, All Events (18 games) and Masters (top 24 in All Events, single-elimination, best-of-three games).
