2008 PBA Senior Tour #8

Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Ind., United States (August 4-7, 2008)

2008PBAS08MarkWilliams.jpg Mark Williams is no stranger to winning. The PBA Hall of Famer won seven PBA Tour titles and is one of only 31 players to surpass the $1 million mark in career earnings on the PBA Tour. Photo PBA.

However, Williams added a new feat to his resume, by winning his first career PBA Senior Tour event on Thursday night. Williams of Beaumont, Texas, defeated Dale Traber of Cedarburg, Wis. in the championship match, 249-234, to claim the PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open title.

“I felt pretty good throughout the tournament even though I didn’t make it into town until the second day, didn’t have as much practice,” Williams said. “On Tuesday I didn’t bowl so well, I even had a 195 game, but Wednesday rolled around and I bowled a lot better.

"I had a nice block on Wednesday and was able to move up from 25th up to the sixth spot. With the scores as high as they were, the lanes were very playable. I had a good tournament at the U.S. Open (finished sixth) so I was confident coming in here although this is only the fifth event I’ve competed in.”

In his first match, Williams defeated Tim Kauble of Marion Ohio, in five games, and then went on to defeat Kenny Parks of East Chicago, Ind., in three, in the best-of-three match. Williams then dispatched of Brian Brazeau of Ocala, Fla. in the single-elimination game, 279-215, placing him in the championship match against Traber.

“It was nice to get the two byes, but you never know if you’re going to be able to win all four games, so it’s great to come out on top,” Williams said.

The 2008 PBA Senior Tour concludes next week with the PBA Senior Decatur Open in Decatur, Ill.

Webb continues to dominate at the PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open

2008PBAS08WayneWebb.jpg Wayne Webb continued his dominance through the qualifying rounds of the PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open, finishing with a total of 3,937 pins on Wednesday at Olympia Lanes.

Webb of Sacramento, Calif., averaged 246 over his 16 games, shooting games of 207, 258, 236, 245, 236, 244, 279 and 236 on Wednesday to retain his lead.

2008PBAS07RonMohr_small.jpg Webb narrowly edged out Ron Mohr (right) of Eagle River, Alaska who finished with 3,912 pins in the early session. Webb, who was in the later session, had to score at least 215 in his last game to beat Mohr, and Webb came up with a 236.

"Coming into today, I thought I had a better thought pattern, but once again I used the wrong ball in the first game and I had to switch to my Ultra Zone. (In the last game) I caught a couple breaks and was able to score 236. I'm just happy that it's over. In conditions like this, you feel like you have to strike every time you pick up a bowling ball. The last two events have been really high-scoring, as is this one."

Mohr was also pleased with his performance. "I knew I could be competitive because the longer oil patterns favor me more," Mohr said. "I was looking at the leader board and I saw that my roommate Kerry Painter and I were really close. I was hoping to beat him for bragging rights. Tomorrow it will be a whole different game, bowling against other guys who have bowled well to get there."

The top 32 qualifiers advance to Thursday's match play. Play resumes Thursday at 9 a.m. with No. 17-32 qualifiers, followed by No. 9-16 at 11 a.m., winners and No. 1-8 at 2 a.m. and the championship round begins at 5 p.m.

Webb weaves early lead at the PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open

2008PBAS05WayneWebb2_small.jpg It took a few equipment changes along the way, but Wayne Webb was able to get into a groove during the early session on Tuesday, and held on for the lead with a total of 1,996 pins in first-round action at the PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open at Olympia Lanes.

Dennis Psaropoulos.jpg Webb of Sacramento, Calif., narrowly edged out Dennis Psaropoulos of Lake Worth, Fla. who finished Tuesday with 1,962 pins. Webb's scores for the eight games were: 205, 233, 278, 269, 235, 287, 278 and 211.

"They've been pretty high scoring games, just as they have been the last few tournaments," Webb said. "I shot with the wrong ball at first, so I switched balls and I found a really good shot and was striking a lot. But then I was having problems again and I had to switch balls again, and I began scoring around 270, 280, but the last game was only 211. Overall, I felt like I really threw the ball well."

2008PBAS07RonMohr_small.jpg Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, shot a 300 in his fifth game of Tuesday's first round. This is his second consecutive tournament that he has done so. He also shot a 300 in the Northern California Classic in June. Mohr currently sits in seventh place with 1,937.

Webb is confident that he can continue his success in Hammond.

"I practiced a little harder before I came out here and I did some things to get my arm loose," Webb said. "I feel like when I came out here I was bowling better than the last swing. I had a lot of confidence coming into this."

Qualifying resumes Wednesday at 9 a.m.
