The Korean women trios played in their own league and cruised to the gold and silver medals in the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships in Hong Kong, China.
The Koreans, who started the day in first and second position after Monday's 3-game series on long oil, shocked the other competitors - women and also the men - when they started the second block on their favorite short oil pattern with games of 782 and 805 to share the lead after four games, 221 pins ahead of their nearest competitors.
Choi Jin-A (235), Hwang Sun-Ok (268), Kim Yeau-Jin (279), pictured above from left to right, and Gye Min-Young (260), Gang Hye-Eun (288), Jeon Eun-Hee (257), pictured right from left to right, averaged 264.5 for the first game and felled a total of 1587 pins.
The less experienced Gye/Gang/Jeon slowed down in the next game (&38) and Choi/Hwang/Kim took a comfortable 63-pin lead thanks to a 701 game. They finished with 682 and a 4128 pinfall total, an average of 229.33, but the match was far from being over.
Gang rolled a 227 game, Jeon added 258 and when Gye Min-Young got up for her final frame, all she needed was 9, spare and a gutter ball to tie their team mates' total en route to give Korea two gold medals in the Trios event.
A strike on her first shot sealed the victory for Gye and her team mates and she finished with a 279 game for 4147 pinfall total and an average of 230.39. The winners felled 2207 pins over the three games on short oil, an average of 245.22.
Each of the six Koreans had a 700-plus series. Jeon Eun-Hee led the way with 764 and 1401 for the six-game series.
Taipei spinners Chien Hsiu-Lan, Wang Yu-Ling and Huang Chiung-Yao, on the left from left to right with their coach, beat out Esther Cheah, Zandra Aziela and Shalin Zulkifli from Malaysia and Japan's Ayano Katai, Haruka Matsuda and Kanako Ishimine for the bronze medal by seven and eight pins, respectively.
