Malaysia on course to defend Team title in 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships

2008AsCMenTeamMAS.jpg Defending champion Malaysia is on course to retain the men's five-player Team title in the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships in Hong Kong. Alex Liew, Daniel Lim, Adrian Ang, Aaron Kong and Zulmazran Zulkifli led the field of 17 teams after the first 3-game block on short oil with 3427 pinfall total and an average of 228.47.

The fivesome started with a 1090 game and overtook the lead in game #2 by posting a new championships record of 1251 or an average of 250.2. Despite a slow down in the third game with 1086, the Malaysians maintained a 30-pin lead over their nearest competitor Qatar.

However, head coach Holloway Cheah and High Performance Director BC Cheah announced a change in the line-up for tomorrow's second block on long oil. Liew will be replaced by rookie Mohd Nur Aiman.

2008AsCMenTeamQAT.jpg Qatar with Hong Kong Open and ABF Tour champion Bandar Bandar Al-Shafi, Mansour Al Awami, Fahad Al Emadi, Mubarak Al Muraikhi and Saeed Al Hajri, had games of 1038, 1202 and 1157 to sit in second place with 3397 pinfall total and an average of 226.47. The Qataris are trying to improve on a second-place finish (78 pins behind Malaysia) in the 2006 Asian Championships in Indonesia

2008AsCChesterKing.jpg The young team from the host country Hong Kong and the UAE are tied for third place with 3337 pinfall total and an average of 222.47. Hong Kong had games of 1101, 1167 and 1069, while the Arabs put together 1113, 1085 and 1139. Wu Siu Hong led the way for the local favorites with 751, while Shaker Al-Hassan led his team with 688.

Chester King (left) led the Philippines into fifth place on Tuesday morning at Hong Kong Bowling City with 3291 (219.40). King, who targets fort he gold medal in Trios later this evening, had games of 290, 267 and 256 for the highest 3-game set in the history of the Asian Championships of 813, an average of 271 per game.

The outstanding feat propelled King to thirs place in All Events, right behind his team mate Raoul Miranda. Mubarak Al Muraikhi from Qatar leads the players from 19 countries after 18 of 24 games with 228.78 average. The top 16 in All Events will advance to the Masters finals.

The top seven countries in the combined team standings - men and women - will earn a spot for the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. The eighth spot is guaranteed for the host country.

The men's teams will return on Wednesday at 2pm for the second and final block on long oil.
