Choi Jin-A achieves perfection to give Korea the lead in women's Team and All Events

2008 Asian Championships

2008ASCWomenTeamKOR.jpg The women's team from Singapore led the first block on short oil in the Team event for the first two games in the Asian Championships in Hong Kong on Monday evening, but at the end the 'usual suspects' finished 1, 2 with Singapore in third.

Defending team champion Korea, (pictured left with Choi Jin-A far left) which finished 1, 2 in Trios after the first block on long oil this morning, had games of 1066, 1106 and 1137 to take the pole position at halftime with 3309 or an average of 220.60.

The last game was highlighted by the second perfecto of the tournament from Choi Jin-A (the other came from her team mate Jeon Eun-Hee in Singles). Joining those two on the team were Gang Hye-Eun, Hwang Sun-Ok and defending Masters champ Kim Yeau-Jin.

2008ASCWomenTeamMAS.jpg Second place belonged to Malaysia (pictured right) with Esther Cheah, Wendy Chai, Siti Safiyah Amirah, Zandra Aziela and Shalin Zulkifli. The team world champions had games of 1050, 1141 and 1065 for 3256 pinfall total and an average of 217.07.

Singapore's Amanda Ng, Bernice Lim, Cherie Tan, Jasmine Yeung Nathan and Jazreel Tan started the event with 1147, the highest game of the day, followed by 1099 and 980 to sit in third place with 3226 and an average of 215.07.

Fourth-placed Philippines is already 172 pins off the medals. Liza Del Rosario, Marie Alexis Sy, Dyan Arcel Coronacion, Elaine Florenci Ongpauco and Krizziah Lyn Tabora had games of 995, 1033 and 1026 for 3054 and an average of 203.60.

2008ASCWomenTeamTPE.jpg The five other countries with a five-player women's team are: 5. Japan, 3041 6. Chinese Taipei (pictured left), 2935 7. China, 2926 8. Hong Kong, 2783 and 9. Guam, 2550.

The top seven countries in the combined team standings - men and women - will earn a berth into the 2009 World Games. The eighth spot is guaranteed for the host country, Chinese Taipei. You don't need a prophet to know that all countries mentioned above but Guam will make it to the World Games.

2008AsCChoiJinA.jpg Choi Jin-A (pictured right) took the lead in All Events after 18 out of 24 games. All six Koreans are among the top 10. The top 16 from the All Events will advance to the Masters finals.

Jin-A's team mates Jeon Eun-Hee, Kim Yeau-Jin and Hwang Sun-Ok sit in second through fourth place, with Malaysia's Doubles champions Esther Cheah and Shalin Zulkifli in fifth and sixth and Singaporeans Jasmine Yeung Nathan and Jazreel Tan in seventh and eighth.

Rounding out the top 10 are Koreans Gang Hye-Eun and Gye Min-Young.
