Choi gives Korea a perfect start to the Asian Championships with gold in Men's Singles

 Two years ago all the Korean men's team brought back home from the 19th Asian Championships in Indonesia was just one bronze medal in Singles.

After the women's team swept all the medals this morning, Choi Ki-Bong (center), a newcomer on the national team gave Korea a perfect start to the 20 Asian Championships in Hong Kong with gold in Men's Singles.

2008AsCKimTaeYoung_small.jpg 2008AsCChoiKiBong.jpg Choi's teammate, Squad 1 leader Kim Tae Young, had to sit and wait until the final frames at 10.15pm when Squad 2 finished their six-game block on the short oil pattern only to get the disappointing news that his 1425 pinfall total, a 237.50 average, was not enough to win a medal.

Choi (left), who took the lead in Squad 2 after five games (1241), secured the victory with a 249 game and a 1490 pinfall total (248.33). However, his female counterpart Hwang Sun-Ok and silver medalist Choi Jin-A outscored Choi this morning by 7 and 4 pins.

2008AsCAlexLiew.jpg Alex Liew (pictured right), the lefty from Malaysia, was mere three pins behind Choi heading into the final game. He closed out with 216 to secure the silver medal with 1454 (242.33),

2008AsCRaoulMiranda.jpg Raoul Miranda (left), Philippines, moved up one spot in the final game thanks to his 235 game to earn the bronze medal with 1437 (238.50).

Nayef Eqab Al-Abadla, UAE, who held the third position after five games, ended up fifth with 1424, just one spot behind Kim Tae Young, who finished fourth.

Mubarak Al Muraikhi, Qatar, and Zulmazran Zulkifli, were 6th and 7th with 1410 and 1374, respectively. Chen Chun Chieh, Chinese Taipei and Zhang Peng, China, the No. 2 and No. 3 from Squad 1 slipped to 8th and 9th place with 1371 and 1365, resp.

106 players from 19 countries participated in the event. Ryan Lalisang, Indonesia, was unable to defend his title as Indonesia hasn't sent any bowlers to the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships which run through July 12th at Hong Kong Bowling City, EMax, Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong, China.

Competition continues on Sunday with the Women's and Men's Doubles.

Korean men target to follow in the footprints of the women's team


2008AsCKimTaeYoung.jpg Kim Tae Young of Korea took the lead in the men's Singles event in the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships in Hong Kong, China after the first of two squads. Kim had games of 247, 239, 248, 212, 245 and 234 to set the pace with 1425 six-game (237.50 average) total on the short oil pattern.

The Korean men's team targets to follow in the footprints of the women's team, which swept the medals in Women's Singles earlier today.

Second place belongs to Chen Chun Chieh, Chinese Taipei, who felled 1371 pins, with Zhang Peng, China in third with 1365.

The second and last squad will start at 6pm.
