Today is the Opening Ceremony of the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships

The 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships which will be held from July 4 to 11, 2008 at Hong Kong Bowling City, EMax, Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong, China. It marks the third time that Hong Kong is hosting the prestigious event after 1988 and 2002.
The Opening Ceremony will be held on Friday, July 4, 2008 at 11am local time at Hong Kong Bowling City, a state-of-the-art 48-laner. Lanes 5-48 (pictured) will be used for the tournament. Kegel lane man and Team USA member John Janawicz will take care of the lane maintenance.

Mr. Victor Hui, SBS, JP, Chairman of Elite Sports Committee under the Sports Commission of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Vice-President of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China has kindly consented to officiate the Opening Ceremony.
The biennial event has drawn over 250 bowlers and officials from 19 countries and territories to Hong Kong, including China, Chinese Taipei, DPR Korea, Egypt, Guam, India, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Macau,; Malaysia, Philippines, Qatar, Saipan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.
A total of 168 bowlers - 107 men and 61 women - will compete in Singles, Doubles, Trios, Team of Five, All Events and Masters for gold, silver and bronze medals in the men's and women's division respectively.
The 6-men and 6-women Hong Kong, China Team will be led by defending men's Masters champion Wu Siu Hong and current Asian Ranking No. 1, Chan Shuk Han (pictured).
Joining Siu Hong on the men's team are Cyrus Cheung Chun Chung, Michael Tsang Pak Kei, Rickle Kam Siu Lun, Eric Tseng Tak Hin and Joshua Chow Hoi Leung.
Joining Shuk Han on the women's team are Vanessa Fung Suet Yee, Sylvia Kong, Katherine Lau Hoi Yan, Sarah Cheng Yuen Ting and Milki Ng Tsz Yin.
The pressure is huge for the young but talented Hong Kong team as it is vital for the Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress to win a medal on the home ground. The team will be coached by Pedro Merani, Purvis Granger and Art McKee.
Among the favorites are the players from Arabia, especially Bandar Al Shafi from Qatar. The Asian Ranking No. 2 clinched the men's Open Master title (pictured) as well as the title in the 2008 ABF Tour-Hong Kong., both at the host center of this championship, Hong Kong Bowling City.
The Malaysian team is spearheaded by reigning women's World Ranking Master queen Wendy Chai (right) and men's WRM runner-up Zulmazran Zulkifli.
Equally strong are the men's and women's teams from Korea with the advantage on the women's side thanks to Choi Jin A the two-time World Champion (Doubles and All Events) from Monterrey 2006.
Chen Dong-dong (left), who won the women's title in the 2008 ABF Tour Hong Kong is among the strong Chinese women's team as well as Yang Sui Ling, the 2005 World Champion in the masters event.
The spinners from Chinese Taipei rely on Wang Yu-Ling three-time World Champion from 2005.
"With so many top class bowlers from all over Asia, we could expect very thrilling and exciting competition in the seven-day championship in Hong Kong", said Vivien Fung, chairman of the HKTBC and head of the organizing committee of the championship.
