In a battle of Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famers, first-year Senior Tour player Wayne Webb defeated Johnny Petraglia to win the 2008 PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast Friday at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

Webb, a 20-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist bowling in only his second Senior Tour event, defeated Petraglia 204-172 in the championship to win the $20,000 first prize.

"Bowling the championship match was just like the rest of the tournament for me," said the 50-year-old Webb. "You really had to stay on your toes and keep moving and adjusting. I really didn't feel like I had that good of a shot until this morning's match play round. It felt like I had to make perfect shots the whole tournament."

For Petraglia, it was a bitter disappointment after having dominated the entire tournament from the opening qualifying round to earn the No. 1 qualifying spot for the stepladder finals.

"You never want to lead a tournament by a lot because it makes it that much more terrible to lose—just terrible, Petraglia said.

Webb was able to overcome an open in the sixth frame – a missed 10-pin -- which dropped him two pins behind Petraglia."

"I couldn't believe I missed that spare but I just yanked it," Webb said. "I thought that was going to be the turning point in the match but I was able to recover.

"It's tough to see someone who bowled as well as Johnny this week lose but when it comes down to one match, it happens."

In the semi-final match Webb defeated two-time Senior U.S. Open champion and PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker, 225-212 to advance to the final. In the opening match, Baker defeated one-time Senior Tour and five-time Denny's PBA Tour champion Bob Handley, 176-156. It was the second consecutive year that Baker and Handley finished third and fourth in the Senior U.S. Open, respectively.

As one of the most demanding formats in the sport, the four finalists had to bowl 51 games of qualifying and match play to make it to the stepladder.

The next stop on the PBA Senior Tour is Klamath Falls, Ore., for the PBA Senior Epicenter Classic June 23-26.
