Petraglia in command after Round Two Qualifying in Senior U. S. Open
06/18/08
Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia continued his hot pace in qualifying in the PBA U.S. Senior Open presented by Suncoast, retaining the lead after second round competition Tuesday at the Suncoast Bowling Center.
The six-time Senior Tour and 14-time Denny's PBA Tour winner has a 2,948 12-game pinfall total after two days. He rolled 1,471 for his six games on Tuesday (245.1 average) with games of 225, 219, 234, 278, 257 and 258.
Petraglia admits to enjoying long format tournaments like the Senior U. S. Open which will require a bowler to bowl 51 games in qualifying and match play for the chance to make the stepladder finals.
"If you shoot 548 over (over 200 average), and you're not having a good time than I don't know when you can," said the 61-year-old lefthander. "I like the longer formats, the longer the better.
"So far, from practice through the second block of qualifying things have stayed pretty similar," Petraglia added. "If things stay that way, I'll know how to prepare for tomorrow's qualifying."
Petraglia, along with fellow PBA Hall of Famers Mark Roth (left, currently tied for 30th ) and Steve Cook (currently tied for 18th), are trying to become the first to win both the national tour's U.S. Open and Senior U.S. Open.
Defending Senior U.S. Open champion Rick Minier (r.), who became the first amateur to win the event, is currently in sixth. Second-year Senior Tour player Kenny Parks, who won the tour's other major, the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Senior Masters in Tucson, Ariz., last week is in ninth.
The 321-player field will bowl another six-game qualifying block Wednesday before the field is cut to the top 25 percent of the field for a nine-game qualifying round Thursday morning.
After qualifying on Thursday, the top 24 players will advance to 24 games of round robin match play which will continue through Friday. After qualifying and match play, the top four survivors will compete in a traditional stepladder finale which gets underway at 6:30 p.m. EDT (3:30 p.m. PDT) on Friday.
The Senior U.S. Open winner takes home a $20,000 first prize.

2008 PBA Senior Tour #5
Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev. United States (June 15-20, 2008)
