Petraglia leads PBA Senior U.S. Open first round qualifying
06/17/08
Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia averaged 246.1 to take the first round qualifying lead Monday in the PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast at the Suncoast Bowling Center.
Petraglia, a six-time Senior Tour and 14-time Denny's PBA Tour winner, had a 1,477 six-game total on games of 203, 279, 269, 224, 222 and 280 to top a 321-player field made up of PBA Senior Tour professionals as well as amateurs.
Petraglia's last Senior Tour victory was in May in Jackson, Mich.
"It's been a great four weeks, I'm bowling really well and making good adjustments," said the 61-year-old lefthander. "This is a good start because in this tournament you want to be up at the top because all the pinfall carries over."
Petraglia found that the adjustments he had to make today were much more subtle than last week's United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Senior Masters where he was the No. 2 qualifier.
"I had to make adjustments a lot differently here than last week," said Petraglia. "Here I was able to stay in a zone from the 10 to 15 board where I really like to be and just make ball adjustments or adjust my aim point up and down the lanes. Last week I had to make more radical lateral moves left to right."
Petraglia prefers the Senior Open qualifying format and pointed out that the way you approach qualifying in each tournament is very different.
"I'm so much better mentally prepared for this qualifying format," Petraglia said. "If you've got 160 in the ninth, you have to be mentally prepared to double in the 10th the same as you would if you had 240.
Qualifying continues with six-game blocks Tuesday and Wednesday. The field will then be cut to the top 25 percent for another nine games on Thursday, after which the top 24 players will advance to 24 games of round robin match play which will continue through June 20. After 51 games of qualifying and match play, the top five survivors will compete in a traditional stepladder finale which gets underway at 6:30 p.m. EDT (3:30 p.m. PDT) on June 20.
The Senior U.S. Open winner takes home a $20,000 first prize.
