2006-07 PBA Tour #2

Taylor Lanes in Taylor, Mich. (Nov. 1-5, 2006)

2006PBA03TonyReyes.jpg Tony Reyes' first career Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour title couldn't have been any sweeter. Reyes made history by firing the 17th televised 300 game in the 47-year history of the Tour in the semifinals Sunday at Taylor Lanes, then defeated Wes Malott, 255-238, for his first career title.

The 33-year-old from San Bruno, Calif., knocked off PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III, 300-215, in the semifinals, becoming the first bowler since Mika Koivuniemi in the Cambridge Credit Classic in Windsor Locks, Conn., on Dec. 17, 2003, to be perfect on TV.

2006PBA03TonyReyes300.jpg Reyes also became the third bowler – and the first since C.K. Moore in 1996 – to shoot 300 on his way to his first career title. Moore's 300 game also came against Bohn. After firing the 300 game, Reyes refocused to knock off the top-seeded Malott, clinching the win with a strike on his first ball in the 10th frame.

"I did have some shaky legs trying to finish a 300 game for the first time since I can remember," said Reyes, who earned $25,000 and an exemption for 2007-08. "I had to bring it back though after that shot. Business is business and Wes is a great bowler so I knew I had to shoot one more big game."

Reyes had a difficult 2005-06 season which included the passing of his father midway through the season. He finished just 51st in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, but earned his exemption for 2006-07 by wining a special event, "The Final Frame presented by the Denny's PBA Tour."

"I did it for dad. He was here Friday and here's now. I can just feel it," Reyes said. "I've worked so hard over my eight years on Tour and to get to this point is amazing. I felt like it was just a matter of time.

Reyes came into the stepladder finals as the second seed and took on Bohn after he defeated fourth-seed Mike Edwards, 252-203, to advance to the semifinal. After a 3-7 split and an open in the fourth frame, Bohn rebounded with seven consecutive strikes to clinch the win. Edwards defeated Mike Scroggins, 244-222, in the first stepladder match.

Malott took home $13,000 for second, Bohn earned $6,500 for third, while Edwards and Scroggins earned $5,500 and $5,000 for fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Denny's PBA Tour moves to Cheektowaga, N.Y., for the 2006 Etonic Championship Nov. 8-12 at AMF Thruway Lanes. The nationally televised ESPN finals take place Sunday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. EST.

Malott earns top sees in Motor City Classic stepladder finals

Wes Malott.jpg Wes Malott is in a precarious position. The fifth-year Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) veteran earned the top seed into Sunday's stepladder finals of the 2006 Motor City Classic.

While the No. 1 seed has the advantage of only having to win one game to take the title, statistics have been against the spot in recent history. The last two Denny's PBA Tour seasons have seen the top seed in the stepladder finals go 0-6, including Jack Jurek's loss in last week's United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Masters.

"This week was one of my first times bowling in this format," said Malott (Argyle, Texas). "With this format, it's obvious that you're not ever shut out. You just have to stay patient. I had enough games to make my adjustment and I had the right ball in a Track Power Machine."

Malott finished Friday night's session with a record of 13-5 with a nine-game pinfall of 8,009. Total pinfall includes 30 bonus pins for each win and 15 for each tie.

Tony Reyes (San Bruno, Calif.) followed Malott in Friday's round robin. Reyes ended the night by firing a 299 in his final game, jumping past Parker Bohn III (Jackson, N.J.) for the second spot in Sunday's finals with a 7,959 and a 15-3 record.

Bohn, who was in the top spot heading into Friday's final round, slipped in the final nine games to finish with a total of 7,953.

Mike Edwards (Tulsa, Okla.) and Mike Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) rounded out the quintet with Edwards rolling a 7,804 and Scroggins a 7,784.

The five bowlers will advance to Sunday's live ESPN televised stepladder finals at 1 p.m. ET at Taylor Lanes. The winner will take home $25,000 and a one-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption.

Bohn leads top 16 into second match play portion in Taylor

Parker Bohn.jpg Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III went 7-1-1 in the first Round of round robin match play Friday to take over the top spot in the 2006 Motor City Classic at Taylor Lanes.

Bohn (Jackson, N.J.) started the day 18th out of the 32 remaining bowlers, but won seven of his first eight matches to take the lead. He tied Mike Edwards, 236-236, in the final game of the block, which served as a positioning round.

The top 16 advanced to tonight's second block of round robin match play. Those 16 will bowl nine more games with the top five advancing to Sunday's stepladder finals.

Mark Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas), who had to make a big move Thursday evening just to make match play, earned the 16th and final spot for Friday's evening block. On Thursday, Scroggins averaged 249.14 in the second seven-game qualifying round to move up from 61st to 22nd and earn a place in the top 32. He went 5-4 in match play Friday morning.

Mark's twin brother, Mike, also advanced, finishing the first round fifth after posting a 7-2 record.

Also advancing were 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) who went 4-5 and is currently seventh. Jones fired a pair of 300s in the nine games. Walter Ray Williams Jr. (Ocala, Fla.) who recently won his record-breaking 42nd career title, is eighth after posting a 5-4 record.

The top 16 return tonight for the second Round of match play at 6 p.m. EST. The live ESPN televised stepladder finals take place Sunday at 1 p.m. at Taylor Lanes. The winner will take home $25,000 and a one-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption.

O'Neill remains in the lead in Motor City Classic

Bill ONeill.jpg Bill O'Neill is all too familiar with his position after the first Round of qualifying. The 2005-06 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Rookie of the Year was in first place after qualifying in last week's United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Masters and finds himself in the same spot Thursday in the Motor City Classic at Taylor Lanes.

O'Neill maintained his lead throughout the second seven-game block of qualifying, holding off a late charge from Mike Edwards to finish with a 3,413 14-game pinfall, taking the lead into Friday's round robin match play.

The 25-year-old from Levittown, Pa., led the field after the first seven games with 1,694. Edwards (Tulsa, Okla.) averaged 246 over the final seven games and pulled even with O'Neill after a 257 in game 13. O'Neill finished with a 238, however, to finish the night just ahead of Edwards, who finished with a 220.

"I used a stronger ball (in the second) block because the lanes were a little tighter, and then I switched back to the ball I used the first block the last four games," said O'Neill who used a Columbia 300 Wrath and Action. "Everything went well today, but I have to keep it going because there's a long way to go."

The top 32 advanced to match play, where all pins carry over from qualifying. Bowlers earn 30 bonus pins for each win in match play and 15 for each tie.

Edwards, who is looking for his first title since 1994, finished second with 3,395. O'Neill is looking for his first career title.

Also making the cut were 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.), who finished seventh with 3,238. PBA Hall of Famers Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) and Walter Ray Williams Jr. (Ocala, Fla.) also advanced, finishing 11th and 14th, respectively.

Steve Jaros (Yorkville, Ill.) finished with 3,090 to earn the final spot for match play, six pins ahead of Mika Koivuniemi (Hartland, Mich.).

Match play gets underway Friday morning at 11 a.m. EST with the first nine games of round robin match play. The top 16 after nine games will bowl another nine games of match play.

The top five bowlers will advance to Sunday's live ESPN televised stepladder finals at 1 p.m. EST at Taylor Lanes. The winner will take home $25,000 and a one-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption.

Same spot, different tournament; O'Neill leads again

Bill ONeill.jpg Bill O’Neill is all too familiar with his position after the first round of qualifying. The 2005-06 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Rookie of the Year was in first place after qualifying in last week’s United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Masters and finds himself in the same spot Thursday in the Motor City Classic at Taylor Lanes.

O’Neill opened the day with his lowest score of the day, a 178. He quickly rebounded by posting consecutive 268s. The second-year PBA exempt bowler marked his best score of the round, 297, in his sixth game, and finished with a seven-game pinfall of 1,694.

“I bowled a 178 in the first game, so I didn’t feel too well starting out,” said O’Neill (Levittown, Pa.). “I made a ball change and suddenly I went from nothing to something. I feel pretty comfortable here as well. Last time I was here it went well, so it’s nice to be in comfortable surroundings.”

While Taylor Lanes may be comforting to O’Neill, the top-seeded position is not. After finishing on top in the Masters qualifying, O’Neill dropped two out of four matches to be eliminated, including his first round match to Robert Smith, 630-623.

Michael Haugen Jr. (Cave Creek, Ariz.), who bowled the round’s only 300 game, sits in second with a score of 1,684, 11 pins ahead of third-place Mike Edwards (Tulsa, Okla.).

Doug Kent (Newark, N.Y.), last’s week Masters champion, sits 17th with a score of 1,576. 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.), who is bowling on his 28th birthday, finished one spot ahead of Kent in 16th with 1,583.

All 64 bowlers return tonight at 6 p.m. EST will return for another seven-game block after which the field will be put to the top 32 who advance to Friday’s round robin match play.

The top five bowlers will advance to Sunday’s live ESPN televised stepladder finals at 1 p.m. ET at Taylor Lanes. The winner will take home $25,000 and a one-season Denny’s PBA Tour exemption.

Nike shoes help Thompson to lead PBA Tour Qualifying Round

DPBATourLogo118.jpg A fall during practice may have been just what Greg Thompson Jr. needed. Thompson, who has fallen three times in a month as a result of the heel on his shoe coming off, went to a pair of Nike shoes Wednesday to lead the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Qualifying Round for the 2006 Motor City Classic at Taylor Lanes.

The 23-year-old, who only became a PBA member in February, had a good showing last week in the 2006 USBC Masters, one of four PBA Major events. He finished 36th in qualifying, but fell in match play to Brian Waliczek, literally.

"I had a good shot against him and I beat him the first game with a 260, but in the middle of the second game I fell and after that I was scared to get to the line," said Thompson. "I felt good coming into today because this is a pattern I usually bowl well on, but I shot a 199 after the first game and to be honest I was worried. I changed balls after the fourth game and bowled great the last two games. It must be the shoes."
