2006EBT18PeterLjung.jpg Peter Ljung (left) set the pace in the first round of the finals in 4th Vienna Open powered by Columbia 300 Sunday morning at Plus Bowling in Vienna. The Swede, who qualified for the finals as one of the squad leaders, had games of 215, 226, 239, 228, 256 and 245 for 1409, an average of 234,83.

2006EBT18BrittBrondsted.jpg Finn Mika Luoto was second with 1382 and Britt Bröndsted (right), Denmark, was the best of six women, who made the second cut, in third place with 1382 including 48 pins handicap.

2006EBT18WuSiuHong22nd.jpg Players seeded 9-68 after qualifying and 'Desperado Squad' bowled 6 games from scratch to cut to the top 24 for the single-elimination best-of-three game match play finals. Once again, Jimmy Mortensen was the "cut man" with 1252 and an average of 208,66 to take the 24th and final qualifying spot. Mortensen already hit the cutoff number in qualifying (place 56) yesterday evening.

Those 24 will be seeded 9-32 in the play Round of 32 and will meet the top 8 after qualifying. On his 22nd birthday, tournament leader and No. 1 seed Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong (pictured above with a bag of candies) will take on Mortensen, while Ljung meets Oliver Blasé, Germany. Match Play rounds of 32, 16 and 8 are in a best-of-three games format, highest seeded player vs. the lowest seeded player, the second-highest seeded player vs. the second-lowest seeded player, etc.

The semi-finals and the championship match will be decided in one game. The Vienna Open champion will receive the 7.000 Euro top prize (approx. $8,758).

As every year, lane maintenance is done by Kegel, the official lane maintenance partner of the European Tenpin Bowling Federation. 2005 USBC Open Singles and All Events Champion John Janawicz is the Kegel lane man in Vienna for the third consecutive year.
