2006EBT18PatriciaKlug.jpg Patricia Klug, Austria, and Danes Rasmus Hyldahl/Rene Clausen moved into second place in Singles and Doubles in the fourth qualifying squad Thursday at the 4th Vienna Open powered by Columbia 300.

Klug had games of 221, 228, 241, 186, 236 and 222 to become the first woman to win a squad in this year's tournament with 1334 scratch, a 222.33 average, and 1382 including 48 pins handicap, a standard on the European Bowling Tour.

2006EBT18ThomasGross.jpg Local favorite Thomas Gross (right) remained in the lead with 1400. Two more players cracked the top 8 in this squad. Oliver Blase, Germany, had 1351, good enough for fifth place. Rasmus Hyldahl from Denmark checked in with 1347 to move into seventh place. His partner Rene Clausen contributed 1323 (11th) to propel the team into second place in Doubles with 2670 pins and an average of 222,50.

Singles leader Gross and his wife Ivonne remained atop the list with 2722. Third place belongs to Andrew Cain, United States and Peter Knopp, Germany, with 2634.

2006EBT18AndrewCains25thBirthday.jpg Cain, a former U.S. National Amateur champion, is celebrating his 25th birthday today and Helmut Amstätter (pictured left) from the organizing committee presented Cain with a birthday cake.

2006EBT18AndrewCains25thBirthday2.jpg Cain shared the cake with his wife and friends but as you can see on the right, the American prefers the 'real stuff' from the kitchen at Plus Bowling in Vienna.

2006EBt18WolfgangLohschmid.jpg Now, these were the good news. Here comes the bad one from Finland for the Vienna Open and tournament director Wolfgang Lohschmid (pictured left): Pasi Uotila told him "Finnair's cabin crew started a strike today and therefore our flight to Vienna is cancelled".

The strike began on Thursday, October 19 at 4am Finnish time. Leisure flights only will be operated in full, but scheduled flights were affected. Finnair says on its Website that the strike of the Finnish flight attendants' union is illegal and that they will be able to operate some flights during strike. Unfortunately for the bowlers, Vienna is not among those destinations that can be served.

Pasi_Uotila_5525.jpg As purchasing new tickets is too expensive, Pasi (left) had to cancel all his reservations as well as for Marko Hirvelä, Jussi Lindgren, Jari Ratia and Petri Römark. Uotila is currently in 9th place in the European Rankings and will lose some more ground this week. After Vienna, Uotila has only two tournaments (Naples and Kungsbacka) left to make it among the top 8 to qualify for the 2007 World Ranking Masters in Doha, Qatar.

Due to the cancellation some spots in the Friday and Saturday squads are available now.

The qualifying for the Vienna Open finals is contested as a doubles tournament. All players roll six-game blocks and no finals will be played. A bowler can only cash once with the same partner. Unlimited re-entries with different partners are possible. The winners of the Doubles event will split 1.600 Euro ($2,002).

The lane maintenance is done by John Janawicz from Kegel. Janawicz is the 2005 USBC Open Singles and All Events Champion. Kegel is the official lane maintenance partner of the European Tenpin Bowling Federation.

Qualifying continues through Saturday evening and ends with the ultimate 'Desperado Squad'. 68 players from the qualifying will advance to the finals starting on Sunday, October 22 at 8am:
- The eight players with the highest six-game blocks will earn one bye and will be seeded 1-8 in the match play Round of 32.
- Players positioned 9-56 after qualifying,
- the leaders of Squad 1 through 6 not among the top 56,
- and the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.

All but the top 8 qualifiers will bowl 6 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 24. Those 24 will be seeded 9-32 in the play Round of 32.

Match Play Rounds of 32, 16 and 8 are in a best-of-three games format, highest seeded player vs. the lowest seeded player, the second-highest seeded player vs. the second-lowest seeded player, etc.

The semi-finals and the championship match will be decided in one game. The Vienna Open champion will receive the 7.000 Euro top prize (approx. $8,758).
