Andrew Cain sets the pace in 4th Vienna Open
10/18/06
Former U.S. National Amateur Champion Andrew Cain took the early lead in the 4th Vienna Open powered by Columbia 300 at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria in both the Singles and the Doubles event.
The lefty, who spend a ten-day vacation with his family in Vienna, Salzburg and Munich prior to the tournament, rolled a 1373 six-game series, an average of 228.83, in the first out of 14 qualifying squads on Wednesday.
Cain came out of the gates quickly with 223, 244, 268, 245 and 226 before he finished with a disappointing 167-game. By winning the squad, Cain is automatically qualified for the finals. Even if his 1373 score would not be enough to make the first cut to the top 56, Cain would advance to the finals as one of the leaders of squads 1-6.
As the cut is expected to be around 1300, Cain and second-place finisher Nikolay Ovchinnikovs, Latvia, (1329) should be among the top 56. In this case, Christian Provaznik, who rolled the third-highest 1272 series in Squad 1 would be qualified for the finals.
Peter Knopp, Germany, saved his best till the end and fired the highest game of squad 1 in the sixth with 269 to land in fourth place with 1261. As usual the qualifying for the Vienna Open finals is contested as a doubles tournament. Knopp (left) teamed with Andrew Cain to set the pace with 2634 pinfall total and an average of 219.50.
Ovchinnikovs and his partner Vladimirs Pribilevs were second with 2482 (206,83) with Radek Pospisil and Karel Kutina, Czech Republic, in third at 2468 (205.67. The winners of the Doubles event (no finals) will split 1.600 Euro ($2,002).
68 players from the qualifying will advance to the finals starting on Sunday, October 22 at 8am:
- The eight players with the highest six-game blocks will earn one bye and will be seeded 1-8 in the match play Round of 32.
- Players positioned 9-56 after qualifying,
- the leaders of Squad 1 through 6 not among the top 56,
- and the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.
All but the top 8 qualifiers will bowl 6 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 24. Those 24 will be seeded 9-32 in the play Round of 32.
Match Play Rounds of 32, 16 and 8 are in a best-of-three games format, highest seeded player vs. the lowest seeded player, the second-highest seeded player vs. the second-lowest seeded player, etc.
The semi-finals and the championship match will be decided in one game. The Vienna Open champion will receive the 7.000 Euro top prize (approx. $8,758).
