Six players crack top 58 in final qualifying squad

2006EBT15MichaelFaganAmandaBeck.jpg Six out of forty players survived the cut in the 29th and final qualifying squad in the 100.000 Euro Gutperle Viernheim Open presented by Storm. Taco Verhoef, Netherlands, hit the cutoff number with 1307, an average of 217,83.

Amanda Beck, United States (pictured here with her boy friend, defending Viernheim Open champion Michael Fagan), rolled games of 242, 210, 226, 214, 263 and 234 to lead the squad with 1437 pinfall total including 48 pins handicap.

2006MWCJasonBelmonte_small.jpg Jason Belmonte of Australia won the qualifying in Viernheim for the second consecutive year, worth 2.500 Euro. Belmonte, who uses the two-handed delivery, led the field of 372 players - 319 men and 53 women - from 27 countries with 1463 six-game total and an average of 243,83.

2006EBT15LizJohnson_small.jpg 11-time PWBA champion Liz Johnson, United States, was the top-ranked woman in second place with 1440 including the standard 48 pins handicap. Johnson receive a 1.000 Euro bonus, Beck came up three pins short to finish third.

Three more players cracked the 1400-bar in the last squad. Finnish veteran Teemu Raatikainen was mere one pin behind Beck to jump into fourth position with 1436. Canadian Danyck Briere was next with 1429. Danish international Jimmy Mortensen shot 1420 to move into seventh place, six pins behind Mauricio Celli from Italy, who short the third perfect game of the tournament en route to a 1426 pinfall total.

Rounding out the top ten were Peter Ljung, Sweden, 1419; Jesper Agerbo, Denmark, 1408; and Vincent Cayez, France, 1405.

2006EBT15OrAviram_small.jpg PBA champion Lonnie Waliczek (1381) and Or Aviram, Israel (left, 1359) were the other players from Squad 29, who moved into the top 58. Dane Thomas Larsen beat the cutoff number after Squad 28 (1300) with 1304 but fell three pins short of the eventual cut (1307).

The ultimate chance to qualify for the finals will be the one-game 'Desperado Squad' at 12.30. The top 58 qualifying leaders plus the top 6 'Desperados' (seeded 59-64) will advance to the semi-final.

Players seeded 33-64 (at 2pm) and players seeded 1-32 (7pm) will bowl eight games from scratch to cut to the top 40 for the single-elimination best-of-three-games finals on Sunday (starting at 8am). The top 8 from the semi-finals will earn two byes and are guaranteed 1.300 Euro each. The winner will receive the huge 25.000 Euro first-place check (approx. $31,700).

The 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 presented by STORM is the 15th stop of the 2006 European Bowling Tour and one of its "Majors". With total prize fund of 100.000 Euro or more than US$125,000 the Viernheim Open is the "richest event" on the European Bowling Tour for the second consecutive year.
