Jason Belmonte (left) is mere one squad away from winning the qualifying in 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open presented by Storm at Bowling Center Viernheim, Germany. The Aussie, who won the qualifying last year, led the field of 369 players with 1463 six-game total and an average of 243,83.
Former PWBA champion Liz Johnson, United States, was the top-ranked woman (out of 54) in second place with 1440 including the standard 48 pins handicap. The men's and women's qualifying leader after the 29th and final squad on Saturday morning 8am will receive a 2.500 and 1.000 Euro bonus, respectively.
Chris Van Damme led the 28th squad with 1392 six-game total and an average of 232,00. The Belgian veteran had a high game of 275 and finished with a low game of 205. Other players, who reached the 1300-plateau in this squad included Joanne Alsebrook (1371) and Zara Glover (1366), both of England, Pasi Uotila ((1318) and Osku Palermaa (1311), both of Finland as well as 2-time defending ranking champion Paul Moor, England (1305) and Benjamin Pachonik, Germany (1301).
Moor's and Pochonik's score might not be enough to survive the first cut to the top 58 as Dane Mikael Brændeskov is the "man on the bubble" with 1300, a 216,67 average.
The ultimate chance to qualify for the finals will be the one-game 'Desperado Squad' at 12.30. The top 58 qualifying leaders plus the top 6 'Desperados' (seeded 59-64) will advance to the semi-final.
Players seeded 33-64 (at 2pm) and players seeded 1-32 (7pm) will bowl eight games from scratch to cut to the top 40 for the single-elimination best-of-three-games finals on Sunday (starting at 8am). The top 8 from the semi-finals will earn two byes and are guaranteed 1.300 Euro each. The winner will receive the huge 25.000 Euro first-place check (approx. $31,700).
The 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 presented by STORM is the 15th stop of the 2006 European Bowling Tour and one of its "Majors". With total prize fund of 100.000 Euro or more than US$125,000 the Viernheim Open is the "richest event" on the European Bowling Tour for the second consecutive year.
