Gräber takes commanding lead in 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open

Christian_Graber_4686.jpg Christian Gräber of Germany overtook the lead in the qualifying of the 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 presented by STORM Monday evening in the 12th of 29 qualifying squads at Bowling Center Viernheim, Germany.

After a slow start with 198, Gräber posted scores of 228, 209, 269, 267 and 221 to finish the six-game series with 1392 pinfall total and an average of 232,00. He holds a commanding lead over previous leader Martina Beckel, who is 64 pins behind in second place with 1328 including the 48 pins handicap for women.

Former professional Peter Knopp, both of Germany, rolled a 1327-series in Squad 11 and missed Beckel's score by mere one pin to sit in third place. Next is Hank Boomershine, President of Roto Grip, with 1312, with Dutch Nicole Sanders in fifth position at 1307.

The 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 presented by STORM is the 15th stop of the 2006 European Bowling Tour and one of its "Majors". With 100.000 Euro or more than US$125,000 total prize fund the Viernheim Open is the "richest event" on the EBT Tour for the second consecutive year. The winner will receive the huge 25.000 Euro first-place check (approx. $31,700).

Qualifying continues through Saturday, September 16, and concludes with the one-game 'Desperado Squad' at 12.30. The top 58 qualifying leaders plus the top 6 'Desperados' (seeded 59-64) will advance to the semi-final and bowl eight games starting from scratch to cut to the top 40 for the single-elimination best-of-three-games finals.
