2006 PBA Senior Tour #6

Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood, Calif., (July 2-5, 2006)

2006PBASGaryDickinson.jpg Gary Dickinson now stands alone as the second most celebrated titlist in Senior Tour history after winning the 2006 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Northern California Classic Wednesday.

"I had a nice reaction and very few opens," said Dickinson. "That tenth frame (in game two of the championship match) may have been the only one."

Dickinson shot every game of match play over 200, his low game of the day a 204 in the second game of the Round of 16 match play. He defeated Ty Dawson, Sunnyvale, Calif., in game three of the title match (267-235) after losing game two in a roll-off (215-215, 17-20) and taking the first game 245-212.

"It was just a really nice day and I either had a good game or guys had bad games," said Dickinson.

The native of Edmond, Okla., was tied with Gene Stus (11 titles each) for the distinction of second place all-time Senior Tour titlist, until tonight's victory set him apart. Dickinson needs only two more wins to tie first place Senior Tour titlist John Handegard (14 titles).

2006PBASRonGarr_small.jpg Right-hander Rohn Garr (pictured), Ridgedale, Mo., seeded 22nd after Tuesday's qualifying, came from a 2-0 deficit in both the Round of 32 and the Round of 24 to win those matches before falling to Kevin Croucher, Grants Pass, Ore. in the Round of 16.

Defending champion Ross Packard, San Jose, Calif., was eliminated in the Round of 24, losing to Ty Dawson, who moved on to defeat Ted Staikofff, Black Hawk, S.D., Henry Gonzalez, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Tom Baker, King, N.C., before falling to Gary Dickinson in the championship match.

Local Pro-shop owner and Senior Tour titlist Don Sylvia, Discovery Bay, Calif., also advanced to the Round of 24 before facing elimination in the Round of 16 against four-time Senior Tour titlist Bob Chamberlain, who took the match 3-2.

Next week, the PBA Senior Tour heads to the National Bowling Stadium, in Reno Nev., for the 2006 USBC Senior Masters. The Championship match will take place Friday, July 15th at 12 p.m. PT.

Roger_Workman_5194.jpg 3-time PBA Senior champion Roger Workman, Kenova, W. Va., moved to second place after Tuesday's qualifying round in the 2006 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Northern California Classic at Harvest Park Bowl.

He was in fourth place after Monday's eight-game qualifying block, and averaged 227.19 Tuesday to move into the #2 spot. "I felt really comfortable with what was out there today," said Workman. "I slowed down and moved up on the approach and tried not to go after the release."

Competing at Harvest Park Bowl has always been a positive experience for Workman, and his finish today with a 3,635 16-game pinfall continues that tradition. "This is my fourth trip here and I've always enjoyed it."

Still in the lead, 2005 PBA Senior Player and Rookie of the Year Tom Baker finished day two with a 3,662 16-game pinfall, averaging 228.88 to secure the top seed in Wednesday's match play.

Craig Kisro, Granada Hills, Calif., earned the final spot in match play finishing 32nd with a 3,337 16-game pinfall, while Gary Hiday, Indianapolis, IN., finished in 8th with a 3,515 16-game pinfall.

Latest News: In an exciting round-of-32 finish to Tuesday night's competition, 27th seed Harley Trumbull, New Boston, Mich., lost to 22nd seed Ron Garr, Ridgedale, Mo., 3-2, Trumbull taking the first two games (253-235, 201-194), with Garr winning the second two (214-181, 258-189) and battling through game five with a 223 against Trumbull's 213 to win the match.

Match play will continue Wednesday at 11 a.m. with three rounds of best-of-five-games, narrowing the field to the top 4 bowlers. The top four will then compete at 7 p.m. for the two final seats in the title match to immediately follow, with the winner taking home $8,000.

Tom Baker sets the pace in PBA Senior Northern California Classic

2006PBASTomBaker.jpg Winning three of the five Senior Tour events so far this season, Tom Baker is leading the pack once again with the first day of qualifying complete in the 2006 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Northern California Classic at Harvest Park Bowl.

Baker (King, N.C.) led after the first five games of qualifying with a 1,225 five-game pinfall and maintained that lead for the rest of Monday. However, Baker isn't leading by much.

Only one pin separates Baker from Senior Tour titlist Don Sylvia, who finished in second place after shooting a 279 in game eight to close the gap.

"You can't win it the first day, but you can get yourself in trouble," said Sylvia. "I'm just glad I got through day one."

PBA Senior Rookie of the Year (2003) and proud owner of the Harvest Park Bowl Pro-shop, Sylvia resides in Discovery Bay, Calif. and was glad to have bowled well for the local crowd.

"Harvest Park (Bowl) is a special place for me," said Sylvia. "I met my wife here, and it's nice to bowl good in your hometown."

Also in the top 10, Ted Staikoff (Black Hawk, S.D.) led A squad qualifying with an eight-game pinfall of 1,801 and ended the day in a tie for ninth place with nine-time Senior Tour titlist Pete Couture (Titusville, Fla.).

All bowlers will return Tuesday for another eight games of qualifying before the field is cut to the top 32 who will begin match play Tuesday night. Match play continues Wednesday until just two bowlers remain. The best-of-three-games title match takes place Wednesday evening with the winner taking home $8,000.
