Defending champion Korea claims No. 1 seed for Girls Team Finals at World Youth Championships

    Singapore, England and United States also earn a shot at the title; Korea's Hwang Yeon-Ju and Kim Seon-Jeong take gold and bronze in All Events, Singapore's New Hui Fen gets silver

     Defending champion South Korea averaged 213.25 in the final three-game block on long oil to claim the No. 1 seed for the Girls Team finals at the 12th World Youth Championships in Thailand with 5037 six-game total and an average of 209.88.

    The top four teams after six games preliminaries - three games on medium oil and three games on long oil - advanced to the finals on Sunday, July 1, at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok.

    The Koreans will clash with fourth-placed United States in the semifinals while Singapore, seeded second, takes on No. 3 England.

    The Korean girls (pictured right), who target to improve on four gold medals in the 2010 WYC in Helsinki, Finland, have already won three gold medals in the 2012 Championships. However, none of the top seeds in Singles and Doubles, girls or boys, has won a gold medal in this championships so far.

    2012WYCGirlsAETop3.jpgHwang Yeon-Ju (center), who won the title in Doubles with Kim Seon-Jeong (lright), who started the Championships with victory in Singles, led her team with 1306 to capture the gold medal in All Events. Kim averaged almost 250 on the long pattern to jump from 12th to third place in a span of three games to secure the bronze medal with 3755. Kim fell just two pins short of silver, which went to New Hui Fen (left) of Singapore with 3557.

They closed things out with 752 and 837 for 5037 total (209.88) to finish 160 pins ahead of day one leader Singapore with New Hui Fen, Ilma Nur Jannah, Krishna Darshini and Bernice Lim (pictured right), who checked in with 4877 (203.21).

    2012WYCGirlsTeamEngland.jpgEngland's Autum Chamberlain and Katrina Maciver, who won the gold medal in the Team event at the adult European Championships earlier this month, and team mates Danielle Hopcroft and Bethany Hedley (left) leaped from seventh place to third behind a 2482 series on the long pattern to book their spot in the finals with 4818 (200.75).

    2012WYCGirlsTeamUSA2.jpgHolding a one-pin lead over Malaysia heading into the sixth and final game, Junior Team USA's Jessica Earnest, Kelsey Muther, Amanda Greene and Danielle McEwan (right) posted 848 to Malaysia's 757 to secure fourth place with 4790 (199.58).

    Chinese Taipei (below right) slipped from third to sixth place with 4692 and was followed by Japan in seventh place with 4680. Colombia (below left) was eighth with 4595, followed by Sweden and Canada in ninth and tenth place with 4539 and 4495.

    2012WYCGirlsTeamColombia.jpgLed by Hwang Yeon-Ju of Korea (3871, 215.06) the top 24 of 96 girls from 29 countries in All Events (combined results of the Singles, Doubles and Team preliminaries) advanced to Masters match play, which will conclude the Championships on Monday and Tuesday.

    Kana Shimoide of Japan took the 24th and last place with 3543 total and an average of 196.83 for 18 games.

    Asian bowlers grabbed 14 spots, while American girls took six and European players the remaining four spots. Singapore and the United States are the only countries who have the entire team in the top 24.

    Korea, Malaysia and Japan will be represented by three players, Colombia has two and Israel Latvia, Philippines, Russia and Sweden one each in the Masters finals.

    The girls are done for today. The top four teams will return on Sunday, July 1st, for the semifinals and finals starting at 3 p.m. local time. The Masters Round of 24 is slated for Monday, July 2nd, at 12.30 p.m. with the top eight advancing to Round Robin on Tuesday, July 3rd, at 9 a.m. The semifinals and finals are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.

    274 girls and boys from record 48 countries, who must not have reached their 21st birthday on January 1, 2012, will compete will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, four-player Team event, All Events and Masters in the ten-day event.

    The WTBA patterns "Mexico City" and "Atlanta" will be used in Bangkok. The 45-foot Mexico City pattern is the second-longest of the twelve WTBA certified lane pattern (four short, four medium and four long). With a length of 38 feet, the Atlanta pattern is the shortest of the four medium pattern.

    Singles is being played on "Mexico City" and Doubles will be contested on "Atlanta", while the Team event will feature both oil patterns (3 games on each pattern). The Masters will be staged on dual lane condition (one lane dressed with the medium pattern and the other lane dressed with the long pattern).

    The top four players and teams after six games in Singles, Doubles and Team, respectively, will advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 meets No. 4 and No. 2 takes on No. 3. The winners will determine the World Youth Champion, while the losers will share the bronze medal. All matches are single-game matches.
