PBA National Tour #7

ABC West Lanes in Mechanicsburg, PA (Dec. 7-11, 2005)

2005PBA07PatrickAllen.jpg The defending PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen earned his first title in the 2005-06 Denny's PBA Tour season and his sixth career title with a 247-218 win over PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker in the title match of the 2005 Keystone State Championship Sunday at ABC West Lanes.

Allen jumped out to an early lead, striking on his first five shots while Baker was forced to convert three spares over the same span. "I wanted to get out as fast as I could, and fortunately I kept the clamp down," said Allen, who won $40,000.

"That match could have gone the other way if I didn't carry those strikes." Baker, 51-years-old from King, N.C., tried to put pressure on Allen with strikes in the 7th and 8th frames, but the left-hander matched him both times.

Allen defeated 2004 PBA Player of the Year Mika Koivuniemi, 226-200, in the semifinals to advance to his 10th career title match in 15 championship round appearances. With the match tied through four frames, Koivuniemi failed to strike in frames 5-9 and opened twice, while Allen had two strikes and three spares.

The loss dropped Koivuniemi to 11-2 all-time against lefties on TV, with both losses coming to Allen, who won three titles and earned $350,740 last season.

Baker defeated Mike Scroggins, 225-188, in their semifinal match. Baker stayed clean with six spares and six strikes while Scroggins opened three times through the first six frames.

Baker earned $20,000 for second while Koivuniemi and Scroggins won $10,000 apiece for their respective third and fourth place finishes.

The Denny's PBA Tour moves to Clifton Park, N.Y., for the 2005 Empire State Classic, Dec. 14-18 at Spare Time - Clifton Park. The nationally televised ESPN finals take place Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. EST.

Only two wins missing from a perfect weekend for Tom Baker

Tom Baker, who was named 2005 PBA Senior Player and Rookie of the Year by the PBA yesterday, upset 23-time Denny's PBA Tour title winner Brian Voss, four-games-to-three, in the 2005 Keystone State Championship Round of 8 Friday at ABC West Lanes.

Baker, 51, whose last finals appearance came when he won the 2004 PBA World Championship, lost a sudden-death roll-off, 10-9, to even Friday's match at 3-3. The 10-time Tour title winner struck on his first five shots of the final game while Voss, a PBA Hall of Famer, spared his first three frames.

"To beat Brian Voss in a game seven is a pretty hard task," said Baker, who won the deciding game, 221-180. "If I make good shots, good things are going to happen." Baker faced stiff competition all day. He beat 22-time Tour winner Norm Duke, 4-2, in the Round of 32 and defeated fellow PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III, 4-2, in the Round of 16.

In other matches, Mika Koivuniemi, the 2004 PBA Player of the Year defeated 40-time title winner Walter Ray Williams Jr., 4-2. Koivuniemi averaged 264 in his four wins, including a 300-247 game two victory.

Koivuniemi will face the 2005 PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen in Sunday's semifinal after Allen defeated six-time Tour title winner Tommy Jones, 4-0. Koivuniemi was 3-0 on TV against Allen before the lefty beat him in the semifinals of the 62nd U.S. Open last season.

Left-hander Mike Scroggins will look to win his second title of the season after defeating last week's 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic winner and 32-time Tour title winner Pete Weber, 4-1. Scroggins will face Baker in the semifinals.

The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m. EST.

Brian Kretzer goes into Round of 32 as the top seed

Brian Kretzer is trying to make life a little easier for himself. Kretzer, who had to qualify for the Denny's PBA Tour through the Tour Trials two years in a row, averaged 237.57 over his second seven-game set Thursday to finish as the overall leader in the Round of 64 in the 2005 Keystone State Championship at ABC West Lanes.

Kretzer, who finished 44th in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings, five spots shy of an exemption, is currently 28th in the rankings. He finished with a 3,297 14-game pinfall and goes into Friday's match play Round of 32 as the top seed.

"We knew the scores would be low today and this pattern is supposed to be low," said Kretzer. "I got out of the gate okay and suddenly I'm way in the number and still had 10 games to go. There was never really an anxious moment."

Kretzer was fourth after the first session, then averaged 225.33 in his first three games of the second block before a 289 in game 10 solidified his place among the top. Kretzer will face Rick Lawrence in the Round of 32 as Lawrence finished 32nd with 2,923. Lawrence beat out Commissioner's Exemption Bob Learn Jr. for the final spot by three pins.

Pete Weber, who won last week's 2005 Bowlers Paradise.com Classic for his 32nd career Tour title, finished second with 3,283 and will face Tommy Delutz Jr., who finished 31st with 2,924.

The single elimination, best-of-seven games match play Round of 32 gets underway Friday at 9 a.m. EST. The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from ABC West Lanes Sunday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m. EST.

300 games - Bob Learn Jr.

Brian Voss takes the early lead

Brian Voss averaged 237.43 over his seven-game block Thursday lead the first of two qualifying sessions in the Round of 64 of the 2005 Keystone State Championship at ABC West Lanes.

Voss, a PBA Hall of Famer who also led after seven games last week, got off to a nearly perfect start, firing a 299 in game one. He averaged just 208 over the next three games before scores of 254, 268 and 217 pushed him into the lead with a 1,662 seven-game pinfall.

"You can have the best mechanics in the world, but it all comes down to confidence and it's not something you can turn on and off," said Voss, who had his first top-15 finish of the season last week, but is just 43rd in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings.

"I've been through a lot of these stages in my 24 years. It's early in the season and the second half is where all the money is. If I can just finish the first half strong I'll be okay."

Pete Weber, who won last week's 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic for his 32nd career Denny's PBA Tour title, is second with 1,652. Weber also came out of the gates fast with a 279 in game one.

Chris Johnson, the 2004 PBA Rookie of the Year, is third with 1,650 while Brian Kretzer is fourth with 1,634. Tommy Jones, who has already captured two titles this season, rounds out the top five with 1,622.

All 64 bowlers will return for another seven games tonight at 6 p.m. EST, with the top 32 advancing to Friday's single elimination, best-of-seven games match play. The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from ABC West Lanes Sunday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m. EST.

Dale Eagle wins Qualifying Round in Mechanicsburg

Dale Eagle averaged 224.67 over his final three games to lead the Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round for the 2005 Keystone State Championship with a 1,554 seven-game pinfall Wednesday at ABC West Lanes.

Eagle, owner of 10 PBA Senior Tour titles and three PBA Tour titles, got off to a quick start, rolling games of 220 and 258 to start his day. "[Bowling] is more complicated than it's ever been," said Eagle, who will make his first appearance in a standard Tour event this season on Thursday.

"My plan is to just go out there and bowl, and make the right decisions. I may have to slow the ball down and hook it." Eagle, who finished 23rd out of 466 bowlers in last month's 2005 USBC Masters, won PBA Senior Player of the Year honors in 1999.

Chris Blackmore was second with 1,510 while Jim Pratt was third with 1,508. Sam Ventura was the top amateur, finishing fourth overall with 1,481. Randy Pedersen, a 13-time PBA Tour title winner and current color analyst for the PBA on ESPN, was fifth with 1,476.

Left-hander Chris Hayden and former Team USA member Sean Rash tied for sixth with 1,470 before Hayden won a one-game roll-off, 190-171, to earn the final spot in the Round of 64. Liz Johnson, the sole female bowler who reached a PBA championship match, finished in eighth place with 1,464.

Normally, the top four non-exempt PBA members advance, but with exempt bowler Chris Barnes skipping his second straight event while recovering from back problems, five PBA members and the top amateur advanced into tomorrow's Round of 64.

The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m. EST.
