Pete Weber wins 32nd career PBA Tour title
12/05/05
Pete Weber had some help from above on Sunday. With thoughts of his father on his mind, the PBA Hall of Famer snapped a 26-event winless streak which dated back to Feb. 2004, and defeated Ryan Shafer in the title match of the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic, 189-186.
"This is pure enjoyment. I'm enjoying this just as much as Dad is up [in heaven] … thanks Dad," an emotional Weber said, referring to his PBA Hall of Fame father Dick Weber, who passed away in Feb. 2005.
Weber almost missed his chance to collect the $40,000 and his 32nd career Tour title. Holding the lead, Weber opened in the 8th frame, allowing Shafer back into the match. The four-time title winner struck in the 8th frame, but a disastrous 4-7-10 split in the 9th put Weber back in command. A spare and six pins in the 10th sealed the win for Weber.
Weber advanced to the title match by defeating Tommy Jones, 207-167, in the first semifinal. Jones, aiming to extend a 15-match winning streak on TV, struck just twice in the first nine frames while Weber pulled away with strikes in frames 6-9.
Shafer defeated Brad Angelo, looking for his first career Tour title, 210-196, in their semifinal. Shafer stayed clean through nine frames, striking five times, while Angelo opened twice over the first four frames.
Shafer earned $20,000 for second while Angelo and Jones earned $10,000 apiece for their respective third and fourth place finishes.
The Denny's PBA Tour moves to Mechanicsburg, Pa., for the 2005 Keystone State Championship, Dec. 7-11 at ABC West Lanes. The nationally televised ESPN finals take place Sunday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m. EST.

Weber is back on TV, targets 32nd PBA title
Pete Weber has waited nearly a year to honor his late father, Dick, with his 32nd career Denny's PBA Tour title. He'll get a chance Sunday as he advanced to his first televised championship round since February, 2004 as he defeated Joe Ciccone, four-games-to-three, in the Round of 8 Friday in the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic at Stardust Bowl I.
Weber had to bowl the maximum 21 games on Friday to advance to the finals, winning all three of his matches, 4-3. "Everything that has happened in the last year, from about Christmas to Valentine's Day … it was not a good year for the Weber family," said Weber, whose legendary Hall of Fame father, Dick, passed away in February. "It'd be nice to win again. It's been such a long time."
The 31-time Tour titlist and PBA Hall of Famer is fourth on the all-time titles list, but has not won since the 61st U.S. Open in 2004. Weber will face Tommy Jones, who defeated Robert Smith, 4-3. Jones, who has two titles this season, will be looking to extend his 15-game winning streak on television, which is one shy of tying the all-time PBA record.
Brad Angelo defeated last week's 2005 Chicago Classic champion Jason Couch, 4-0, to advance to his second championship round of the season. Angelo will face fellow New Yorker Ryan Shafer in the second semifinal. Shafer knocked off Norm Duke, who is No. 1 in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, 4-3.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from Stardust Bowl I Sunday, Dec. 4 at Noon CST.

D.J. Archer takes No. 1 seed for match play finals
Looking to win his first career Denny's PBA Tour title, D.J. Archer led the Round of 64 in the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic with a 3,265 14-game pinfall Thursday at Stardust Bowl I. Archer, who advanced to match play for the second time this season, averaged 233,21 over the two seven-game sets in the Round of 64.
"I feel really good. I haven't bowled this well all year," said Archer, whose best career finish is fourth in the 2003 Masters. "Coming into today, I felt comfortable from the get go." As the top seed in Friday's best-of-seven games, single-elimination match play Round of 32, Archer will face Chris Collins, who finished 32nd with 2,960.
Collins beat out Mike Edwards and Rick Steelsmith by five pins apiece for the final match play spot. Mike Scroggins, looking for his second title of the season, was second with 3,207. Scroggins will open match play against Tommy Delutz Jr., who missed last season recovering from right wrist surgery. Delutz was 31st with 2,968.
Left-hander Eric Forkel was third with 3,178 and will face fellow lefty and last week's 2005 Chicago Classic winner Jason Couch in the Round of 32. A 12-time title winner, Couch qualified 30th with 2,969.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Dec. 4 at Noon CST.

Practice pays off for Brian Voss
He's a PBA Hall of Famer and one of the Tour's all-time best, but even Brian Voss knows he can't get away with not practicing. Voss, who's had a slow start to the 2005-06 season, practiced for an estimated 11 hours and 90 games over the last two days and the hard work is already paying dividends.
The 23-year Tour veteran with 23 career Denny's PBA Tour titles leads the field after the first of two qualifying blocks with a 1,703 seven-game pinfall Thursday in the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic at Stardust Bowl I.
Voss came into the week 48th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings with three events remaining in the first half of the season. Last season, Voss led the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings through the first half.
"Terrible," said Voss, when asked to sum up his season so far. "I didn't bowl as much as I should have this summer. These guys are the best in the world. You've just go to get to work sometimes."
Voss, who worked to get his timing and balance back the last two days, started Thursday with a 239, then averaged 261.33 over his next three games. He finished his session with scores of 230, 226 and 224 to hold onto the lead.
D.J. Archer, who is 55th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, is second with 1,684. Brad Angelo is third with 1,656 and Mike Machuga is fourth with 1,616, while 2005 USBC Masters winner Mike Scroggins rounds out the top five with 1,610.
All 64 bowlers will return for another seven games, with the top 32 advancing to Friday's single elimination, best-of-seven games match play. The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from Stardust Bowl I Sunday, Dec. 4 at Noon CST.

Troy Wollenbecker wins Qualifying Round in Hammond
Troy Wollenbecker has a little more incentive than most bowlers to succeed this week in the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic at Stardust Bowl I. The 27-year-old led the Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round Wednesday with a 1,621 seven-game pinfall, while the health of his Tour sponsor, Melissa Schroeder, weighed on his mind.
"I talk to her every day I'm gone, every chance I get," Wollenbecker, Toledo, Ohio, said of Schroeder, who is battling cancer. "It would be a big week for her and for me if I could gain some points."
Wollenbecker, looking to gain an exemption for the 2006-07 Tour season as the top non-exempt bowler in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, began his day with scores of 268 and 277. After shooting 190 in game five, he responded with a 246 in game six before ending his day with a 191.
Amateur Jason Wojnar, Chicago, was the top non-PBA member, finishing second overall with 1,579. Wojnar beat out fellow amateur Bob Hale, Louisville, Ky., for the amateur spot into Thursday's Round of 64, as Hale finished third overall with 1,531.
Left-handers Eric Forkel and Dennis Horan Jr. finished fourth and fifth with 1,525 and 1,511, respectively. PBA member Michael Zicha was 7th overall with 1,497 while Jeff Carter grabbed the final spot in tomorrow's Round of 64, finishing 8th with 1,496.
Normally, the top four non-exempt PBA members advance, but with exempt bowler Chris Barnes skipping this week's event, five PBA members and the top amateur advanced into tomorrow's Round of 64.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Dec. 4 at Noon CST.
