20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships in Hong Kong conclude in style

2008AsCSouthChinaMorningPost_small.jpg Thank you for participating, farewell and safe travels back home said the Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress on a full-page advertisement in the South China Morning Post to the participating players, coaches, officials and guests of the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships which ended Friday evening with the Victory Banquet at EMax, Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong, China. 167 players - 106 men and 61 women - from 19 countries participated in the 20th edition of the championships which were held in Hong Kong for the third time.

Choi and Ang end Hong Kong Asian Championships with victory in women's and men's Masters

2008AsCChoiJinA_small.jpg 2008AsCAdrianAng_small.jpg Choi Jin-A (l.) from Korea and Adrian Ang (r.), Malaysia, were crowned women's and men's Masters champions in 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships Friday afternoon at Hong Kong Bowling City in Hong Kong, China. In an all-Korean women's final, Choi, seeded first defeated Gye Min-Young with back-to-back 236 games, 472-445. In an all Malaysian men's final, Ang, the No. 2 seed, flew past Zulmazran Zulkifli, 449-413, thanks to a 279 in the first game. Jeon Eun-Hee, also Korea, and Zhang Peng, China, earned the bronze medals.

2008AsCMenAllEventsTop3_small.jpg Veteran Chester King (center) dished out another sterling performance and teammate Raoul Miranda (left) held his ground to give the Philippines a gold-silver finish in the men's all-events competition Wednesday in the 20th Asian tenpin bowling championships here. King added a three-game series of 648 pins to his Asian 3-game record of 813 of amass a 24-game total of 5,534 (230.58 average) from his singles, doubles, trios and team outings, while Miranda, already the singles bronze medalist, accounted for 5444 (226.83) to hold off United Arab Emirate's Hussain Al-Suwaidi (right), who settled for the bronze win 5366 (223.58).

2008AsCChesterKingRaoulMirandaFrederickOng_small.jpg The Philippines won the men's trios gold medal in record fashion Wednesday in the 2008 Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships in Hong Kong Bowling City lanes. Chester King, Raoul Miranda and Frederick Ong (l-r) worked hand in hand to accumulate an impressive 4,193 pinfalls (638, 684, 674, 711, 780 and 706) which erased the former Asian record of 3,932 registered by Japan in Indonesia six years ago.

All Events champion Jeon Eun-Hee and Adrian Ang lead Masters finals Round One in HK Asian Championships

2008ASCJeonEunHee_small.jpg 2008AsCAdrianAng_small.jpg Jeon Eun-Hee, Korea, who tragets her fourth gold medal in the 20th Asian Championships, leads the women's Masters competion after the first block on long oil with 1801 total including 60 pins bonus. On the men's side it thumbs up for youngster Adrian Ang, Malaysia, who powered his way into the lead in the final three games with 269, 268 and 248. Ang won all but two of his eight matches to set the pace with 1919 pinfall total. The top 3 men and the top 3 women after another 8-game block will advance to the TV finals on Friday afternoon.

Malaysia, Qatar repeat in men's team event in 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships

2008AsCMenTeamPodium_small.jpg Defending champion Malaysia and runner-up Qatar battled it out for the title in the men's five-player team event in the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships with the same outcome as in Indonesia 2006. The Malaysians won the gold medal and the Qataris had to settle for silver. Korea overtook the Philippines in the final game to earn the bronze medal. Filipinos Chester King and Raoul Miranda claimed the gold and silver medal in All Events with Hussain Al Suwaidi in third.

Gold for Korea, silver and bronze for Malaysia and Singapore in women's Team event at Asian Championships

2008AsCWomenTeamPodium_small.jpg The Korean women (pictured left) won their third gold medal in the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships when they captured the title in the five-player team event on Wednesday morning. Choi Jin-A, Jeon Eun-Hee, Gang Hye-Eun, Gye Min-Young, Kim Yeau-Jin and Hwang Sun-Ok finished with 6463 six game total or an average of 215.43. Malaysia beat out Singapore in the final game 1025 to 983 to secure the silver medal with 6200, while Singapore took the bronze with 6186. The Koreans added gold medal No. 4 when they finished 1-5 and 7th in All Events.

King rules Hong Kong, leads the Philippines to the men's Trios title in Asian Championships

2008AsCFrederickOngChesterKingRaoulMiranda_small.jpg Starting the day just one pin off the lead Frederick Ong, Chester King and Raoul Miranda (l-r) flew past their opponents en route to claim the gold medal in the men's Trios event at the Hong Kong Asian Championships. The three Filipinos finished with 4193 total, an average of 232.94. King had 813 in Team this morning and added 279, 289 and 279 (847) for 1660 six-game total or an average of 276.67. Adrian Ang, Aaron Kong and Mohd Nur Aiman, Malaysia secured the silver medal and Singapore's  Jason Yeong Nathan, Eugene Low and Shaun Ng earned bronze.

Koreans cruise to gold and silver in women's Trios; Chinese Taipei earns bronze

Gye Min-Young, Gang Hye-Eun and Jeon Eun-Hee (l.) overtook  Choi Jin-A, Hwang Sun-Ok and Kim Yeau-Jin in the final game to win the title. while  Taipei spinners Chien Hsiu-Lan, Wang Yu-Ling and Huang Chiung-Yao earned the bronze medal.

Malaysia on course to defend Team title in 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships

2008AsCMenTeamMAS_small.jpg Defending champion Malaysia is on course to retain the men's five-player Team title in the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships in Hong Kong. Alex Liew, Daniel Lim, Adrian Ang, Aaron Kong and Zulmazran Zulkifli led the field of 17 teams after the first 3-game block on short oil with 3427 pinfall total and an average of 228.47. With three more games to go on Wednesday Qatar sits in second place with 3397.  The young team from the host country Hong Kong and the UAE are tied for third place with 3337. Yanni Argyros, Egypt, shot the first 300 by a man in this year's event.

Choi Jin-A achieves perfection to give Korea the lead in women's Team and All Events

2008ASCWomenTeamKOR_small.jpgThe women's team from Singapore led the first block on short oil in the Team event for the first two games in the Asian Championships in Hong Kong on Monday evening, but at the end the 'usual suspects', Korea and Malaysia, finished 1, 2 with Singapore in third. Defending team champion Korea, (pictured left), which finished 1, 2 in Trios after the first block on long oil this morning, had games of 1066, 1106 and 1137 to take the pole position at halftime with 3309 or an average of 220.60.

Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong lead men's Trios event at halfway point

Adrian Ang, Aaron Kong and Mohd Nur Aiman (left, l-r) of Malaysia rolled games of 702, 680 and 615 to lead the 35 trios with 1997 3-game total and an average of 221.89. With Filipinos Raoul Miranda, Chestex King and Frederick Ong mere one pin behind and Hong Kong's boy group Wu Siu Hong, Cyrus Cheung and Eric Tseng further 16 pins behind anything can happen in tomorrow's final block on short oil.

Korea 1, 2 in Women's Trios event after the first block on long oil

Choi Jin-A, Hwang Sun-Ok and Kim Yeau-Jin (left) lead the field of 19 trios with 1963 pinfall total, an average of 218,11, with Gye Min-Young, Gang Hye-Eun and Jeon Eun-Hee second with 1940.

Underdogs Tseng, Cheung win first gold medal for Hong Kong in Men's Doubles

2008ASCMenDoublesHKGwithCoaches_small.jpgEric Tseng and Cyrus Cheung stunned the favorites when they claimed the first gold medal for the host country Hong Kong in the Men's doubles event at the 20th Asian Championships Sunday evening at Hong Kong Bowling City. The underdogs finished with 2750 pinfall total or an average of 229.17. Qatar standouts Bandar Al Shafi and Mubarak Al Muraikhi took the silver medal with 2653, while long-time Japanese internationals Masaru Ito and Masaaki Takemoto earned the bronze medal with 2607. Squad 1 leader UAE had to settle for fourth place with 2579.

Strong finish propels Malaysians to the women's title in Hong Kong Asian Championships

2008AsCEstherCheahShalinZulkifli_small.jpg Esther Cheah and Shalin Zulkifli (l-r with Esther's father, head coach Holloway Cheah) from Malaysia beat their Korean rivals en route to win the gold medal in women's Doubles in the 20th Asian Championships Sunday at Hong Kong Bowling City. The Malaysian top stars finished their six-game block on long oil with games of 494, 478 and 429 to win the event with 2699 pinfall total and an average of 224.92. Jeon Eun-Hee and Gye Min-Young from Korea won the silver medal while the bronze medal went to Chinese spinners Chen Dongdong and Wu Suqin.

Choi gives Korea a perfect start to the Asian Championships with gold in Men's Singles

After the women's team swept all the medals this morning, Choi Ki-Bong (center), a newcomer on the national team gave Korea a perfect start to the 20 Asian Championships in Hong Kong with gold in Men's Singles. Alex Liew (l.), Malaysia, earned the silver medal, while  Raoul Miranda r.), Philippines, took the bronze. Squad 1 leader Kim Tae Young, Korea, finished fourth.

MTBC may seek arbitration over fine By Ajitpal Singh

The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) boycotted the Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) general assembly on Thursday, in which the new committee decided to award the RM50,000 fine imposed on MTBC to UAE bowler Syed Ibrahim for his perfect game in the 2006 Malaysia Open. The ABF had warned MTBC prior to this year's Malaysia Open in March to either pay the hefty fine or not get the former's sanctioning for the event. It is learnt that MTBC may take up the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Korean women sweep Singles medals at 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships

2008AsCSinglestop3ChoiJinAHwangSunOkJeonEunHee_small.jpg The Korean women stated the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships by sweeping the medals in the Singles competition Saturday morning at Hong Kong Bowling City, EMax, Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong, China. Hwang Sun-Ok finished with 290, 279 to overtake Choi-Jin A, who led since the first game by three pins, 1497 to 1494. Jeon Eun Hee rolled the first 300-game in the last game to earn bronze with . Their team mate Kim Yeau Jin, landed in fourth place with 1448.

20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships declared open

First champions to be crowned on Saturday

2008ASCLionDance_small.jpg The 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships got underway this morning at the state-of-the-art Hong Kong Bowling City at EMax in Hong Kong, China. The Opening Ceremony was conducted in a style all the players and coaches and most of the officials prefer: short and sweet, but really beautiful thanks to the Hong Kong Lion Dancers (pictured). In front of more than 250 bowlers and officials from 19 countries, the Opening Ceremony started at 11.15 am with the official march-past of the participating countries and the national anthem of Hong Kong, China.

2008AsCHKBCLanes0548_small.jpg The 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships which will be held from July 4 to 11, 2008 in  Hong Kong, China. It marks the third time that Hong Kong is hosting the prestigious event after 1988 and 2002. The Opening Ceremony will be held on Friday, July 4, 2008 at 11am local time at Hong Kong Bowling City, a state-of-the-art 48-laner. A total of 168 bowlers from 19 countries - 107 men and 61 women - will compete in Singles, Doubles, Trios, Team of Five, All Events and Masters for gold, silver and bronze medals in the men's and women's division respectively.
