Pöllänen beats Andersson to end 2010 Women's European Championships with victory in Masters

Five countries share the medals in Riga, Latvia

2010WECLogo_small.jpg Krista Pöllänen, Finland, defeated Sandra Andersson, Sweden, two-games-to-one to win the gold medal in Masters in the 3rd Women's European Championships 2010 Saturday at Zelta Boulinga Center in Riga, Latvia. Andersson received the silver medal while Hayley White, England (0-2 vs. Andersson), and Kamilla Kjeldsen, Denmark (0-2 vs. Pöllänen), shared the bronze medal. Five of the 23 participating countries shared the medals in Doubles, Trios, Team, All Events and Masters.

Dutch girls average almost 230 to lead WEC Team event at halftime

2010WECLogo_small.jpg The five-player team from the Netherlands got off to a blistering start as Wendy Kok, Lisanne Breeschoten, Ghislane van der Tol, Bianca Wiekeraad and Priscilla Maaswinkel tallied a 3436 series on short oil to lead the Team event at the Women's European Championships after 3 of 6 games with a 229.07 average. Sweden, however, was mere 26 pins behind in second place with 3410. Third place belonged to Denmark with 3312 and Germany was fourth with 3297.

English girls come from behind to win Trios gold at European Championships

2010WECTriosEngland_small.jpgEngland's Nicki Ainge, Lisa John and Hayley White (pictured) came from behind to win the Trio title in the 3rd Women's European Championships Wednesday at Zelta Boulinga Center in Riga, Latvia. Starting the second day of the preliminaries in 9th place, the English trio fired the highest 3-game series on long oil (2046, 227.33 average) to grab the fourth and final spot for the playoffs and went on to defeat No. 1 seed Denmark and No. 2 seed Netherlands to claim the gold medal.

Denmark in top qualifying position in Trios after block 1 at Women's European Championships

Netherlands, Sweden and Finland also on course for playoffs

2010WECLogo_small.jpg Kamilla Kjeldsen, Mai Ginge Jensen and Rikke Holm Rasmussen rolled games of 728, 648 and 723 to take a comfortable 134-pin lead in the Trios event of the 3rd Women's European Championships 2010 in Latvia after the first 3-game block on short oil with 2099 pinfall total and an average of 232.22. The Danes outaveraged their nearest competitors from the Netherlands by almost 15 pins.Sweden is third and Finland in fourth place. The second block and the playoffs will follow on Wednesday.

Nina Flack, Helen Johnsson defend Doubles title in Women's European Championships

Top seeded Swedes beat Finland to win the first gold medal of the championships

2010WECDoublesHelenJohnssonNinaFlack_small.jpgNina Flack and Helen Johnsson (r-l) claimed the first gold medal at the 3rd Women's European Championships 2010, when the Swedes successfully defended the Doubles title Monday at Zelta Boulinga Center in Riga, Latvia. In the championship match, the 2008 WEC Doubles champions defeated Finland's Piritta Kantola and Krista Pöllänen, 454-429. Finland took the silver medal and England and Denmark shared the bronze medal. The championships will continue Tuesday and Wednesday with the Trios event.

English duo sets the pace in Doubles at 3rd Women's European Championships 2010

Finland, Denmark, Sweden in the top 4 after the first block on short oil

2010WECLogo_small.jpg Hayley White and Lisa John set the pace in Doubles at the 3rd Women's European Championships as the competition has reached the halfway mark Sunday at Zelta Boulinga Center in Riga, Latvia. The duo totaled 2850 pins and averaged 237.50 over six games on short oil to lead Finland (2756), Denmark (2716) and defending champion Sweden (2708). The 53 doubles from 21 countries will bowl another six-game block on long oil before the cut to the top 4, who will bowl for the medals.

Men's European Championships end today with the Masters competition

2009MECMastersTop2_small.jpgIn a title match between the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, Dominic Barrett (right) from England defeated All Events champion Petter Hansen (left), Norway, two-games-to-one to end the 2009 Men's European Championships with victory in the Masters competition. Barrett, a two-time World Youth champion, lost the first game in best-of-three format, 174-153 but rebounded with two straight wins, 204-187 and 269-185, to wrap up the title. Hansen earned silver and Finns Petteri Salonen and Joonas Jähi shared the bronze.

Finland beats defending champion Sweden to win Team title in Men's European Championships

2009MECLogo_small.jpg Finland became first country to win multiple gold medals in the 2009 Men's European Championships in Aalborg, Denmark, when Joonas Jähi, Kimmo Lehtonen, Jussi Turtiainen, Petteri Salonen, Osku Palermaa defeated defending champion Sweden in the title match, 993-953. Dennis Eklund, Mathias Årup, Robert Andersson, Erik Andersin and Martin Larsen, the No. 3 seed, had to settle for the silver medal. England and Germany shared the bronze medal.

Finns shoot huge final game to claim the top seed in Team event

Norwegian Hansen captures gold in All Events

The Finns will meet No. 4 Germany in the semifinals, while second-seeded England takes on defending champion Sweden, seeded third. Norwegian Petter Hansen (pictured right) captured the gold medal in All Events averaging 219.21 for 24 games.

England takes commanding lead in Team event at halfway mark

2009MECLogo_small.jpg Matt Chamberlain, Mike Quarry, John Wells, Dominic Barrett and Stuart Williams from England rolled games of 1034, 1124 and the field-best 1205 en route to lead the Team event at the Men's European Championships in Denmark after the first block on short oil with 3364 pinfall total and an average of 224.27. Defending champion Sweden sits in second place after 3 of 6 games with 3238. Trailing Sweden by 81 pins to sit in third place was Finland with 3157. The team from the host country Denmark was fourth with 3086.

In the title match, the Swedes topped tournament leader Norway with Petter Hansen, Mads Sandbækken and Tore Torgersen, 624-563. England's Stuart Williams, Matt Chamberlain and Dominic Barrett and Martin Larsen, Robert Andersson and Martin Paulsson, Sweden, shared the bronze medal.

Starting the day in fifth place, the Norwegians posted the second-highest 1937 on long oil to leap four spots with 3812 total and a team average of 211.78. They will meet short oil leader Martin Larsen, Robert Andersson and Martin Paulsson, Sweden, in the semifinals. No.2 Stuart Williams, Matt Chamberlain and Dominic Barrett, England, lwill bowl the second Swedish trio, Erik Andersin, Mathias Årup and Dennis Eklund, in the other semifinal.

Swedes dominate Trios preliminaries on short oil at Men's European Championships

Martin Larsen/Robert Andersson and Martin Paulsson (r-l) had games of 707, 658 and 618 to overtake their compatriots Mathias Årup, Erik Andersin and Dennis Eklund, who led the first squad with 1981, by two pins with 1983 (220.33). England with Stuart Williams, Matt Chamberlain and Dominic Barrett were third with 1944 and The Netherlands with Remco Verboon, Michael Kok and Johnny Spil, fourth with 1880

Palermaa, Salonen start the Men's European Championships with victory in Doubles

In the title match, the top seeded Finns defeated 2006 Doubles World Champions Martin Larsen and Robert Andersson, Sweden, 429-416, to claim the title. The Swedes had to settle for silver for the second consecutive MEC. England and Norway shared the bronze medal.

Palermaa/Salonen earn the top seed for Doubles finals at Men's European Championships

The Finns posted the second-highest 2675 series and averaged 222.92 in the second 6-game block on long oil for 5264 12-game total, an average of 219.33. Salonen leads in All Events after 12 games in doubles with 2684 and an average of 223.67. Palermaa/Salonen will meet No. 4 Petter Hansen and Svein Roger Olsen, Norway,in the semifinals, while No. 2 Stuart Williams and Dominic Barrett, England, take on No. 3 Martin Larsen and Robert Andersson, Sweden.

Scandinavians set the pace in Doubles in the Men's European Championships

The 86 doubles from 31 countries were split into four squads to bowl six games on short oil and six games on long oil. Norwegians Petter Hansen and Svein Roger Olsen (l-r) led Squad 2 with 2640 6-game total, an average of 220.00, and remained atop the leaderboard after the competition has reached its halfway point. Hansen had the field-best 1366 pinfall total (227.67) and is tied with Petteri Salonen, Finland, for the lead in All-Events (combined results in Doubles, Trios and Team) after 6 of 24 games. Olsen contributed 1271.

Men's European Championships gets underway in Aalborg

2009MECLogo_small.jpg The 2009 Men's European Championships will be held from June 4 through 14 at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark. The Championships get underway Friday with the official practice and the Opening Ceremonies scheduled for 8 p.m. The host country Denmark will be joined by 30 other countries in the quest to win medals in the Doubles, Trios, 5-Player Team, All Events and Masters. The 8-day competition starts on Saturday, June 6 with the Doubles competition followed by Trios and Team and ends with the Masters on Saturday, June 13.

35 countries to participate in the Men's European Championships in June

2009MECLogo_small.jpgThe European Tenpin Bowling Federation has announced that record-tying 35 ETBF member federations have registered up to six players for the 2009 Men's European Championships to be held at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark, from June 4 through 14, 2009. 30 federations will send a full team of 6 players. The total number of participating players, 194, is the second-best in the history of the championships, 13 lower than the record 207 players in the 2007 MEC in Vienna, Austria.

Flack ends Women's European Championships with victory in Masters

2008WECMastersTop4_small.jpg The Masters title in the Women's European Championships remained in Sweden. In the championship match, Nina Flack (pictured) defeated Mai Ginge Jensen, Denmark, two-games-to-one to win the prestigious title. In the decisive game, Flack flew past her opponent, 201-149. In the semifinals Flack swept her team mate No. 1 seeded Helèn Johnsson, 2-0, while Jensen eliminated the third Swede, Diana Alfredsson, 2-1. Jensen received the silver medal while Johnsson and Alfredsson tied for bronze. Sweden won all but one gold medal of the championships and led the medal tally with four gold and three bronze medals.

Swedish team cruises to the title in Women's European Championships

2008WECTeamSweden_small.jpg The five-player team from Sweden (left) earned the gold medal in the five-player team finals Friday in the Women's European Championships in Odense, Denmark. Nina Flack, Veronica Lantto, Diana Alfredsson, Therese Forsell and All Events champion Helén Johnsson flew past Germany in the semi-finals, 1215-1089, and then defeated Finland's Mari Santonen, Laura Tuomisalo, Heidi Mannonen, Minna Mäkelä and Krista Pölllänen in the championship match, 1080-1056. Finland, who defeated Denmark in the semi-final, 1068-1018, settled for silver, while Denmark und Germany tied for bronze.
