Schedule, registration changes for 2013 USBC Open Championships

USBCLogow_small.jpgWhen the USBC Open Championships returns to the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., in 2013, the storied tournament will have changes designed to improve the event and ease of registration. First, the tournament's daily schedule will be adjusted to allow for fresh oil for all squads. Second, an enhanced online registration system will allow captains to enter and change their team information at any time,as payments are made. Also beginning in 2013, each event will cost $55 per bowler.

Showcase lanes newest addition to USBC Open Championships

2012USBCOCLogo_small.jpg Bowlers headed to the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships in Baton Rouge, La., will have the opportunity to practice on the same oil pattern and lane surface being featured on the main tournament lanes at the Baton Rouge River Center. In addition to the 48 lanes that will be constructed on the ground floor of the River Center for the USBC Open Championships, USBC will build four showcase lanes on the venue's second level.

Baton Rouge welcomes 2012 USBC Open Championships

Holden helped snap the official string line and turned over the keys to the Baton Rouge River Center as dignitaries, supporters and media got their final look at the empty convention center before construction crews turn it into a state-of-the-art bowling stadium.

El Paso to host USBC Open Championships in 2015

The 2015 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships is headed to El Paso, Texas (pictured), marking the first time in a decade the tournament will travel to a brand new host city. The 2015 event will be the 112th edition of the USBC Open Championships, which has been held in 48 cities in 26 states since its inception in 1901. The last time the tournament ventured to a new city was 2005, when it was held in Baton Rouge, La., also its first visit to Louisiana.

Oregon bowler fires milestone 300 at USBC Open Championships

2011USBCOCMichaelBarber_small.jpgMichael Barber (pictured left) of Gresham, Ore., has enjoyed bowling success at the local and state level, and he experienced a breakout performance at the USBC Open Championships on June 26 that earned him a special place in the tournament record books. The 49-year-old left-hander got off to a slow start this year at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., but found his rhythm in singles. He opened with a 227 game before stringing together 12 consecutive strikes for the 51st perfect game of the 2011 tournament and the 750th in 108 years of USBC Open Championships competition.

Four bowlers roll perfect games at USBC Open Championships in Reno

2011USBCOCDJDaniels_small.jpgFour bowlers rolled perfect games at the USBC Open Championships this week, bringing this year's total to 47, which ranks fourth in 108 years of competition. D.J. Daniels (pictured) of Mason, Ohio, was the first to get the job done, and the experience of getting close to perfection before helped him finish things off this time. In 2005, Daniels started a game with nine strikes before a 10 pin ended his run. On June 17, he kept his cool and calmly delivered three strikes in the 10th frame for the 44th perfect game of the 2011 USBC Open Championships.

First-timer rolls 800 series, moves into second in Regular Singles at USBC Open Championships

2011USBCOCKristopherPrather_small.jpgKristopher Prather (pictured) of Milton, Fla., shot 300 in the first game of his adult bowling career last August, and he continued his trend of dramatic debuts with an 800 series in his first appearance at the USBC Open Championships this week. The 19-year-old right-hander rolled nine consecutive games of 200 or better and improved with each set he bowled, shooting 649 in team and 689 in doubles before making a run at the Regular Singles lead June 13.

Florida's Michael Moore shoots record-breaking 11th 800 series at USBC Open Championships

Six bowlers roll perfect games at National Bowling Stadium

2011USBCOCMichaelMoore_small.jpgMichael Moore (pictured) of Orlando, Fla., flirted with a spot in the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships record books when he rolled a 297 game during the 2009 event in Las Vegas, and two years later, he finally solidified his place in history with an 802 series on the championship lanes June 4. Moore registered the record-breaking 11th 800 series of the 2011 Open Championships, which marked the most in a single tournament.

Defending champions make run, but won't repeat at USBC Open Championships

In 2009, he made his way into the spotlight when he rolled an 862 series, the highest set in tournament history, and claimed the Regular Singles title. A year later, he shared that winning feeling with his teammates as he helped Northern Lanes Pro Shop of Midland, Mich. (pictured), to the 2010 Team All-Events crown.

Florida bowler joins 50-Year Club at USBC Open Championships

25th and 26th perfect games rolled at National Bowling Stadium

2011USBCOCCarloSimonelli_small.jpgCarlo Simonelli (pictured) of Brooksville, Fla., became the 140th bowler in 108 years of United States Bowling Congress Open Championships competition to make 50 tournament appearances when he marched down Center Aisle at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., on May 13. The 78-year-old right-hander made his tournament debut at the 1960 event in Toledo, Ohio, and only has missed two events since.

New Team All-Events leader at USBC Open Championships

The group rebounded from a mediocre team performance (3,163) and averaged 233.9 in Doubles and 240.7 in Singles to take the top spot with a 10,283 total. Mike Malinick of Garden Grove, Calif., Michael Cave, of Hopewell, Va., and Branden Baird of Phoenix rolled 300 games at the National Bowling Stadium this week.

Linds Lakers back on top at USBC Open Championships

2011USBCOCLindsLakers1_small.jpgFor the second consecutive year, Linds Lakers 1 of Minneapolis (pictured) walked out of the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., with the lead in Team All-Events at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships. Last year, the team finished in second place, 97 pins short of a third Team All-Events title since 2002. The group also came up short in team with another runner-up finish. The 2002 and 2006 champion had a 10,076 total.

West Coast bowlers take doubles lead at USBC Open Championships

Bowling doubles together on the championship lanes for the first time, the duo had a 1,466 total to overtake Charles Surina of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Bill Guszczo of Orland Park, Ill. (1,447). Hohlbein had games of 258, 236 and 300 for a 794 series, while Copeland added 201, 276 and 195 for 672.

Iowa bowler sets mark with 806 and 826 series

Becomes first bowler in Open Championships history to roll two 800s in the same year

Making his 10th tournament appearance, the 31-year-old right-hander started his day with an 806 series in doubles, rolling games of 269, 258 and 279. He then posted games of 279, 290 and 257 for an 826 series in singles to move past previous leader Edward Rede (814) of El Paso, Texas.

Two highest team scores rolled in National Bowling Stadium history

Brian Brazeau Pro Shop of Ocala, Fla., (pictured) claimed the top spot with a 3,439 effort, followed closely by Cambridge 1 of Feeding Hills, Mass., with 3,410. The third contender, Pam's Boys 1 of Salem, Ore., settled into fourth place with 3,371.

New Yorkers sneak into Regular Team lead at USBC Open Championships

2011USBCOCStrikeSynergy_small.jpgThere have been a lot of challengers in the Regular Team event at the USBC Open Championships this week, but Strike Synergy of Honeoye Falls, N.Y., was the first team to finish the job and claim the top spot in the standings. On April 4, anchor bowler Pat Donaghue stepped up in the 10th frame to give his team the lead. He calmly delivered two clutch strikes and seven pins for a 3,254 total, five pins better than previous leader, Professional Image Center 1 of Wichita, Kan.

Lead changes in Team, All Events and Doubles at USBC Open Championships

Two bowlers reach 50 years of participation

2011USBCOCKellyBonta_small.jpgKelly Bonta (pictured) of Wichita, Kan., had a memorable weekend at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships as he found his way to the top of the leaderboard in Regular Team and Regular All-Events. The 45-year-old right-hander rolled a 719 series to help Professional Image Center 1 to a 3,249 total March 26 and returned the next day with 747 in doubles and 711 in singles for a 2,177 all-events effort at the National Bowling Stadium. Joel Carlson of Omaha, Neb., previously held the lead with 2,164.

New leaders emerge in Singles and Doubles at USBC Open Championships

Championships will feature 12,837 five-player teams

2011USBCOCEdwardRede_small.jpgEdward Rede (pictured) of El Paso, Texas, was hesitant about leaving his family to compete at the 2011 USBC Open Championships, but knowing they were home watching on the tournament's webcams made him much more comfortable on the lanes. Rede's mother watched intently and relayed frame-by-frame updates to his wife, Solanja, and he definitely didn't disappoint his fans as he charged into the Regular Singles lead with games of 258, 299 and 257 for an 814 series at the National Bowling Stadium on March 18.
