Kelly Kulick (l.) of Union, N.J., finished the opening day of match play frustrated but at the top of the leaderboard Monday at the U.S. Women's Open, a USBC event. After 12 games of match play, Kulick found herself leading with a 5-7 record and a 36-game total of 7,879, including 30 bonus pins for each victory. Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., is second, 11 pins back, and Amanda Beck of Plano, Texas, is third, just 25 pins off the lead. Round robin match play continues Tuesday with the final 12 games.
The dream season continued to be a reality for Kelly Kulick as she won her second major women's title in 15 days on Wednesday, claiming the U.S. Women's Open, a United States Bowling Congress event. Kulick, of Union, N.J., defeated Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 233-203, in the first live event televised from the new International Training and Research Center. Kulick also won the event in 2003 and became the 11th player to win the event more than once. Kulick earned $20,000 for the victory.

Johnson won the event in 2007 and 1996. "This is probably the best female television show we have had in a long
time," Johnson said.

Among the top 24 players, who advanced to match play on Monday and Tuesday, were five international bowlers.

Tammy Boomershine (pictured) has dealt with injuries and adversity her entire bowling career, but for a short time last August she was able to put all of that our of her mind and bask in her victory at the U.S. Women's Open, a United States Bowling Congress event. Boomershine of North Ogden, Utah, will look to regain that feeling again
when she takes on a field of the top women bowlers from around the
world at the 2010 U.S. Women's Open, which begins Friday, May 7 at
Cityview Lanes in Fort Worth, Texas.
The United States Bowling Congress announced that it has designed a
program that will give women bowlers from across the globe an
opportunity to compete for more than $330,000 in prize money and get
expert coaching all in one trip to Texas next spring. Two custom travel packages were created to make travel easier for players interested in competing in the USBC Queens in El Paso, Texas, and the U.S. Women’s Open
shortly after in Fort Worth, Texas, while also giving them a chance to
receive expert coaching at the new International Training and Research Center. 
At the past two major women's championships, Shannon O'Keefe of
Arlington, Texas, has suffered heartbreak, just missing the televised
portions of last year's U.S. Women's Open and this year's USBC Queens.
She was determined not to experience that feeling again. O'Keefe was the top qualifier Friday after 40 games with 8,837, an
average of 220.93, and leads a field of the top 12 bowlers who advanced
to the ESPN-televised rounds at Sunset Station's Strike Zone Bowling
Center. Among those 12 are two international bowlers, No. 5 Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia and No. 10 Clara Juliana Guerrero of Colombia. Quarterfinal matches will start on Saturday at 3pm Las Vegas.
Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (pictured left), Keller, Texas, rolled the
second-highest 1992 series Friday morning at 72-lane Strike Zone at
Sunset Station in Henderson, Nev. to leap one spot and to overtake the
lead in the 2009 U.S. Women's Open after four rounds. Shannon O' Keefe,
Arlington, Texas, had the highest 1848 series of all 48 players to move into second place. Third round leader Shalin Zulkifli, Malaysia, slipped to third place and is the best of
20 international players from 13 countries, who survived the
first cut. All players return on Friday afternoon for the fifth and final block on Viper before the field will be cut to the top 12. 
Malaysian star Shalin Zulkifli (pictured) was not only the best of the 59 international players in the 2009 U.S. Women's Open but she led the entire 170-player field after the 3-day preliminaries as the field was cut to the top 48 players. Zulkifli had an 1830 8-game series on the PBA Shark oil pattern, 1700 on Chameleon and 1838 on Cheetah to led the Open with 5368 total pinfall and an average of 223.67 for 24 games. Before the 48 players will start with the first of two 8-game blocks on Friday, Danielle van der Meer, Netherlands, and Kerry Smith, New Holland, Pa. will break the tie for 48th place in a one-game roll-off at 8.30am.

Chameleon and Thursday features the shortest of all pattern, Cheetah. There is no doubt that the 59 international players from 18 countries,
who stayed in Las Vegas after the Women's World Championships to bowl
in the Open, had an advantage as they are used to bowl on short in the
continental and World Championships. Clara Juliana Guerrero (l.), Colombia, led the Squad on Cheetah and Shalin Zulkifli (r.), Malaysia, was next.
Missy Bellinder (pictured) of Fullerton, Calif., overtook the lead in the 2009 U.S. Women's Open after the second day of qualifying at Strike Zone in Henderson, Nev. Bellinder, who was the first woman who joined the PBA, posted a 1758 (219.75) total in Squad B Wednesday morning in the second 8-game block on the PBA Chameleon pattern to lead the 170 -player field with 3598 or an average of 224.88 for 16 games. First-round leader Tammy Boomershine of North Ogden, Utah, sits in second place with 3782. Third-placed Shalin Zulkifli ,Malaysia, is the best of 17 international
players among the top 48. Amanda Fagan rolled the tournament's second perfecto 
Pat member Missy Bellinder led Squad B on the first day of qualifying for the 2009 U.S. Women's Open with 1840 pinfall total. Bellinder moved into second place in the overall standings, 108
pins behind Squad A leader Tammy Boomershine (l.). In this squad, the top 3 players from the huge international contingent came from Venezuela and Korea. The Marcano sisters, Alicia and Karen (right with Gilant Gonzalez), moved into 15th and 21st place overall. All 170 players will return on Wednesday for the second block.
Tammy Boomershine, North Ogden, Utah (pictured with husband Hank) took the early lead in the 2009 U.S. Women's Open - A USBC Event Tuesday morning at Strike Zone at Sunset Station in Henderson, Nev. Boomershine finished her 8-game block on the PBA Shark pattern with the sole 300 game of Squad A followed by 277 to set the pace with 1948 pinfall total and an average of 243.50. The 59 international players from 18 countries are well represented among the top 24 led by Shalin Zulkifli, Malaysia,in second place. Players from Squad B will bowl their first qualifying round later Tuesday.
